Hello everyone,

I need some assistance identifying some ammo that I received from a seller when I picked up some rifles off of him. From left to right, the first and second cartridges chamber fine in my Mausers but the third one is visually different and is stamped "7x57" on the bottom. It also looks like a possible Prvi partisan cartridge but I am not sure. I tried chambering it once and it was a no go so I haven't tried since. I think the cartridge with the red paint around the neck and on the primer is Yugo 1950s ammo but I am not sure what the second one is. I want to be sure exactly what they are before I take this ammo with me to the range. Any thoughts on these ?

As for the ammo pouch, this is what most of the surplus ammo came in when the seller gave it to me as part of a rifle package. It has sat at the back of my cabinet for a while and lately I have been wondering what country of origin it came from. The leather is still quite stiff and there is a single ink stamp under one of the leather flaps. Anyone got an idea what this one is ?

Thanks guys!

So the "7x57" is Yugo ammo ?

Just thought it would help, the cartridge with the red band around the neck and on the primer came on stripper clips that had "SEY" stamped on the back. They did not fit properly in my Mauser charger guides and I think they are meant for the M48BO.

Edit: I uploaded the images again but numbered the cartridges to make this easier to figure out.

I think the reason ammo #1 on the SEY stripper clip didnt fit into your rifle is because the stripper clip is for 7.62 NATO ammo. SEY, is American, manufactured by Seymour.

Yes, the 7x57 is Yugo ammo. i also believe the pouches are post war Yugo.

Very interesting, any reason why it is so different compared to the other two ? I am guessing this is a true 7x57mm and not to be confused with an 8x57mm ? It certainly is shorter in height and the neck is different.

As for the pouch, that was my guess too.

#1 is Romanian.

Thanks! I can't believe I did think of it as Romanian. I have read that some Romanian ammo is .321 in bullet diameter but is that true of all Romanian surplus ?

Wow that explains a bit. Compared to my charger clips I use on my confirmed 8mm Mauser rounds, the "SEY" clips are slightly wider and the lips are a bit longer. They do hold all the surplus ammo just fine though, sad it doesn't work in my 8mm Mauser charger guides.

I think I have about 10 of these, any idea what their value would be ?

I don't think the clips are of any value, other than guys wanting a dozen or two here and there. I think i have seen guys try to sell them here before anywhere from 25 cents to $1 each. Do you have an M-14? try it on that.

If you don't need the 7 mm ammo, pm me and i would be interested to buy.

I do not own an M14 but I guess I will just hang onto the SEY charger guides for now. As for the 7x57, I am guessing it will certainly not work in my Mausers ?

Not if its an 8mm Mauser. Well, at least it won't give good results!!

I see, well I do not own an firearms in 7x57. After going through the ammo pack, I found that I only have 10 rounds for 7x57 so I'm not sure anyone would be interested in them. Too bad I don't have a South American contract Mauser at the moment.

On another note, does anyone have a Yugo ammo pouch for comparison to my mystery pouch ?

THOSE ARE Yugo ammo pouches, we imported very large numbers with and without rifles into the US and Canada

John

Thanks John. Would these have been used with the M48 BO? Any idea what the value of one of these in very good - excellent condition would be in the collector market ?

I'm surprised that the 7x57 won't chamber in your 8x57 rifles. It should fit just fine. It wouldn't do any damage if it were accidentally fired either.
I'm not saying to shoot it out of your rifles, but the cartridges are kissing cousins, other than the bullet diameter.

Privi cases seem to have thicker rims than other manufacturers. Good brass though. Very ductile and last through several reloadings.

I wasn't quite sure if the "7x57" was simply the European way of saying "8x57". I only tried once to chamber it but I encountered some resistance when going to close the bolt. Mind you, I got a similar result from all the milsurp ammo. I find that you have to be relatively hard on the bolt when you go to chamber a round otherwise the round seems to get stuck.

NABS;

These pouches were issued with the M-1924, M-24, M24/47, M24/52, M48, M48a, M48BO

It is 7mm., one mm. shy of your Mausers' caliber which I guess is 8mm. Mauser.
Due to a different taper, the 7mm. Mauser won't chamber and it is a good thing because if it were fired in the 8mm. larger chamber, it could cause some problems with gas leaking in the action. Besides, a 7mm slug bouncing inside an 8mm tunnel is not conducive to good accuracy...;)

The Yugo 7x57 is a recent commercial load. It would work fine in a 7x57 rifle. The others are 8x57, aka 7.92x57, aka 8mm Mauser. If your rifles are 8mm, the 7x57 ism't going to work. Different cartridge. If you shoot the others, be sure to clean your rifle thoroughly.

Well guys, I just had to try it. A 7x57 cartridge chambers easily in at least 3 different 8 x 57 chambered rifles. It feeds without issue and the bolt closes without problems. It also extracts without problems.

I also don't condone shooting the 7mm cartridges out of an 8mm rifle but as for gas problems, I highly doubt it. The only thing that will happen, is an unstable bullet at low velocity, due to low pressures because of the under sized bullet. It will also fire form that pesky 7x57 case to 8x57 dimensions.
