Spring Bear season

I have never been bear hunting, but now that I had a couple in my deer hunting area the last 2 years, I been thinking of going.

I know a lot of you guys bait. How long does it take a bear to hit a bait spot once you put it out?? Can you put bait out Friday afternoon, and have the local bears checking it out before the end of the week end?? or are bears timid to new smells and bait when put out in the woods the first time ?
 
I was playing around with my recurve today but I'm still not good enough so I will stick with the compound, or the 45/70, or the 7-08, or the 303, or the 300 savage, or ..... :rolleyes:

If you're lucky yes,your bait can get hit right away but that's not always/usually the case.Early in Spring(April here in NB let's say)when bears 1st come out it takes awhile to get their digestive system up and running.They prefer(need) grasses,dandelions,new green growth etc and aren't real interested in baits.By mid-May they are eating machines and hit bait readily.That said however,it's been an early spring here this year and I'd suspect we should be 3-4 weeks ahead of last year?Regardless,we won't start baiting until May 1st but the bears should be plenty active by then this year?

How quickly bears hit depends on how many bears you have in the area and how good your bait is.Once they find it your in bizness,and to help them find it we always use a stink bag/bucket.Hang a burlap sack or 5 gallon bucket shot fulla .22 holes and fulla fish in a tree over your bait.This acts as a long distance call lure that they will smell from a looooong ways off and help them zero in on the goodies.(donuts,day old bread,popcorn etc.)We also saturate the ground with fryer grease and/or leave a 5gal bucket of grease with a loose lid for them to spill.They'll get the grease all over their paws and and track it through the woods from the bait site,attracting even more bears.Once you get one bear hitting it snowballs from there if there are any amount of bears in your area but the key to getting that 1st bear in is a good ripe stinkbait.;)
 
I'll be black bear hunting with a new T/C Contender carbine barrel this year...

I'm heading to the range this morning with my new 14" barrel in 45 Colt for my T/C Contender carbine will be fun to see what kinds of velocities/accuracy I will be getting with 300gr - 345gr bullets, overall length of the T/C Contender carbine with this barrel is 29" and it weighs appr 3 1/2 lbs without a scope... :D

Won't be going for a while my new RA XCR in 223 just arrived... :D
