From US ATF site:
Q: I am a nonimmigrant alien. Are there any restrictions on the types of guns I can temporarily bring into the United States for hunting or for a shooting competition?
A: Yes. Unregistered National Firearms Act weapons (which include machine guns, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and silencers); U.S. Government origin firearms or firearms that contain U.S. Government origin manufactured parts or components; and firearms from certain proscribed countries may not be temporarily imported. If you think the firearm(s) you wish to import may be affected by these restrictions, please contact the Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch.

Looking for someone who has taken their AR to the US for USPSA (or other matches..) I assume this means as long as we have proof of buying the AR at a retail level, there is no issue, but are there other issues?

If this is wrong fourm, pls move,,

thks

I've taken my AR to the states with no problems.

The most common restriction on ARs that I know of are:

1) No barrels under 16"
2) No Norinco's

I think most shotguns are now okay with the expiration of the existing Assault Weapons Ban. Others can chime in on the most commonly refused shotguns.

You don't need proof of purchase, on your Form 6, the ATF will want your registration certificate number and PAL license number.

Hope this helps

I'm always amazed at the subtle difference in regs. In the US, you can have an AR15 with a 100-round Beta Mag (30-round regular capacity mags are cheap as dirt if you buy milsurp used, and they're legal damn near everywhere that has any sense... no, I wasn't talking about you California...) but GOD FORBID you shorten the barrel to less than 16" without an SBR permit.

I like their suppressor laws too, as in the fact that you can OWN one if you're a law abiding citizen... yes, paperwork... yes, tax stamp is a money grab... but we go through the same types of paperwork for our PALs, and if I had the option to legally own suppressors you're damn right I'd prefer filling out paperwork to outright denial like it is in Canada. It's not ideal, but it's an improvement!

And then don't get me started on "shall issue" or qualification-based CCW... :dancingbanana::eek::runaway:

I've had Form 6NIAs approved for AR-15s many times, the key points to bear in mind are this:

1) You cannot permanently import an AR-15 into the US, it is prohibited under 18 USC 925(d)(3) and ATF will not issue a Form 6 Part 1 for this purpose, only temporary imports are permitted;
2) ATF Technology Branch has their head up their ass and will likely tell the import branch to deny an application for an AR-15 variant that they've not heard of, which means one not sold in the US that isn't in their reference collection;
3) USPSA is not recognized by ATF as an approved target shooting organization (at least last time I heard it wasn't), only NRA and NRA affiliated organizations are. As a result a match entry form won't get you a Form 6NIA. You need a hunting licence, Utah issues a hunter training licence for $10 that is valid for a year if you need to get one.

Remember State laws play into this as well - AR-15s are banned in California for example, and they're banned with flash hiders in New York too.

U.S. Government origin firearms or firearms that contain U.S. Government origin manufactured parts or components; and firearms from certain proscribed countries may not be temporarily imported

I think this is wrong, I know it's from the ATF website but I have correspondence from ATF that indicates anything that is brought in temporarily is not considered imported for the purposes of the Act, which is why you can temporarily import AR-15s but not permanently import them. There's no express prohibition in US law of temporary imports of Chinese-made guns or lend lease guns.

The minimum legal barrel length for a Title 1 rifle is 16 inches.

on my form 6, I specified I had a 16", 20" and 24" upper for my AR

No uppers under 16" allowed into the USA

I would like to hear if anyone listed an AR as a pistol? and it was allowed.

No Shotguns under 16" barrels as well.
