Hi guys,

Looking for some advice on a particluar shotgun. As my budget is leading me more towards the Mossberg Silver Reserve 12 gauge, I'm still a little unsure of something. I don't know if spending that little extra on the sporting model rather than the field is worth it. All I can really see is that the sporting has the ported barrel and dual bead sights. As this will be used for trap and such, is it better to spend that difference or is it not that much more of a gun. Silly question I know but am beating myself up over it.

Thanks

Paul

I have a Silver Reserve in 12g and I use it for shooting trap and find it a great gun for the price. I have put a lot of shells through it and have had no problems at.

good luck in your decision.

Several reports of broken firing pins on these models. I would not buy one.

regards, Darryl

Well to be fair with the internet you can find 100's of reports of failures of all kinds on ANY gun......millions of people around the world interested in guns, use the computer so you will eventually hear a stories of "common" problems on some guns that do not deserve it. You gotta think of how many people have said gun that DON'T complain about them? People talk more about something negative then positive for the most part.

The Silver Reserve is imported by Mossberg and is made in Turkey by Khan. I bought a Mossberg S/R last fall and used it for trap and skeet and upland game. Right after I bought it I ordered a set of firing pins and springs from Mossberg. No charge. I installed them in about 30 minutes and never had a problem yet. The new pins have a different design and are made from better steel.

Why spend the money on a new Mossberg when you can find used Brownings and Berettas everywhere. Sorry, but these guns are made to look like a more expensive offering. Brownings and Berettas are better guns and worth the extra money. Might as well spend the extra coin and start out where you will eventually end up.

Mossberg is known for inexpensive pump shotguns and for that they shine, O/U's require a different level of craftsmanship and materials to make a good gun.

Do yourself a favour and comb used gun racks for a Beretta or a Browning. Depending on how old it is, you will eventually find one in your price range and it will be superior to the Mossberg, not to mention hold its value.

There's a reason used gun racks are always full of Baikals, Mossbergs, Hatsans, Mavericks and the like. General purpose hunting guns are different and these models mostly fit the bill, but target guns are high volume precision firearms or at least they should be and that doesn't mean you have to spend lots of money. But many buyers make the mistake of thinking that new is better than used regardless of manufacturer. I bet with a little research you could find an older fixed choke Superposed, BL3 or S55. These are great guns and in this price range.

I have a mossberg 535 pump shotgun and i love it! Mossberg is a solid name brand for a reason, really reliable guns you cant go wrong if you get one. Plus I've been noticing through my early hunting career with firearms purchases that when i spent too much money i never regret it, but i do regret when i buy something ####y, hope this help!

I agree, Mossberg is a great name if they stick to what they are known for and what they produce. Their Silver Reserve O/U's are made in Turkey by Khan, Mossberg has very little to do with it, they just import them and put their name on them. Much like the Russian made Baikals that were imported by Remington.

I don't have any problems with inexpensive guns, but I do have problems with inexpensive guns dressed up to look like expensive ones.

Trust me, if you develop an affinity for O/U's you will not be satisfied by the Mossberg and you will want something else, especially for clay games.

Thanks for the info guys. I realize where you are all coming from. My budget is the main thing this time but want to get something here soon to enjoy the full trap season ahead. Maybe I will keep my eyes open for a Browning or something of that class.

Thanks

Paul
