I have shot most of my deer at:

I would have to say 150 - 200.

Furthest I have taken an animal was 450 ish.

Closest I have taken an animal was 125 ish. I have been with-in 15 yrds of deer I just didn't shoot them.

In all my years hunting Deer..... I have shot 12 that were not at a full run.... Thats in 23 yrs hunting, only 3 of those years did I have tag soup, and I usually fill at least 2 tags per season. One some rare occasions I have filled 5 to 7 tags a season.

"Deer" as we commonly refer - probably 100 yards or less. Lump in caribou and moose and it would likely be between 100 and 200 yards. Only shot 3 deer - 2 mulies and one whitetail.

I can go years without taking a running shot. My son and I had 9 deer tags (mixed) apiece this year, none were running when they were shot. You'd be surprised how often deer stop if you don't shoot at them.
 
150 - 200. But I keep buying longer range guns "just in case".

Sigh.

I hate these threads as they remind me how I don't REALLY need a .257 Weatherby or a .300 RUM in the rack...
 
My closest was about 100yds, my farthest about 150. I practice and am confident on deer out to 300yds (with a decent rest or shooting prone) but I try to get closer anyways. a great shot is better than a good shot any day of the week.
 
I find it real hard to judge distance in the truck headlightsR:d:. Just kidding, are we talking white tail or mule deer cause out here we have both and mule deer can be very dumb at times.

Tried that. The mulies were willing to stop for a look back, but none of the whitetails took a second look. We were pushing small patches of bush, though, so it was sort of like flushing grouse. I would love to have a standing shot next time, it would feel like luxury to be able to think about it for a few seconds before shooting. Maybe next year.

A change of hunting methods might go a long way to making that standing shot happen.
