Anyone shoot a Win Model 88?

I have had 88s for 35 years and neither had nor heard of any of the problems JerryJeff is talking about.
Coldmaker
I had one re barreled to 260 Rem and it has excellent accuracy.Sub MOA for sure.

RR can you tell me who did the rebarreling?

edit: and info on the barrel you chose ( make, lenght, contour, etc.)

The Gunsmith and barrel maker are retired .I went with a 24" Octagon.I have posted this pic so many times I think everybody's tired of it.

the only reference I have ever seen to 88's firing by themselves with the safety on is from Mic Mcpherson, a gunwriter and professional customizer of Marlin lever rifles.

I have had 2 pre 64 88's both worked fine. They are great rifles, second only to the Sako lever action.

I would suggest dropping down to atleast 150gr for the .308 if you are going to shoot factory ammo. IMO, 180gr is'nt the best weight for this cal.
You can get much better ballistics with a lighter bullet say, 168gr and down.

Yeah I was pretty surprised that the 180gr shot as well as they did. I think it might have been a bit of luck. My Vanguard Varmint in .308 won't shoot 180gr less than 2" at 100yds. I am gonna try some 150gr next time and hopefully the rifle groups as good or better than the 180s did.
The 180gr might be a little heavy for black bear anyways, so I hope the rifle likes the 150gr. I think the 150gr would be overkill for the tiny Blacktail Deer on the Island so I plan to try out some of the 125gr managed recoil loads as well.

JerryJeff: Thanks for the advice regarding the potential safety flaw of the Model 88. I never use the safety on any of my rifles, the only exception being hammerless break action shotguns. I never carry a round in the chamber of any rifle - prefer to chamber a round only when I am ready to shoot. I figure the Model 88 design will be perfect for me because it will be quicker and easier to chamber a round by flicking the lever rather than working a bolt action.

For those of you who had one rebarreled how does it shoot?
On par with factory? Sub moa?
My rebareled Win mod 88 in 358Win is honest 3/4" moa rifle with 200gr RemCL and 225gr NoslerBT bullets shortened to oal 1,280" useing TAC powder. Laminate stock from Boyds helps to keep its zeroed year after year.

OK guys, enough about the Model 88 already  I was hoping to find a good one for my collection one day and now with all this positive talk, you've likely driven the value up to where I'll have to pay a fair price now, sheesh ;)

Anyone got a picture of John Wooters' custom M88? He had it built by Joe Balickie I believe and chambered in 7-08. Wooters called it "the meanest little brush gun you ever laid an eyeball on" in the Outdoor Life article it was featured in...
