I was wondering what would make a good moose rifle the last time i went i took a .270 pump that was borrowed wanting to buy something of my own for around $1000

Brace yourself, my friend.

You could start with what conditions you hunt, what actions you prefer, right or left handed, scoped or not, etc.

Vanilla

What's wrong with plain old vanilla, 30-06. It can do what ever you need and the recoil is very managable. Just about every manufacturer makes a rifle in this caliber and the EE has plenty for sale. A nice used rifle and some good optics are possible for $1000.

how did you like the .270 pump?
The reason I ask is that my moose hunting partner uses a rusty old Rem 7600 pump in .270. We hunt out of a canoe and he has bang flopped a swamp donkey for 5 years running with shots ranging from 20 to 200yds.

I was in the same situation as you a year or so ago!

Went to tradeexcanada.com and found myself a nice milsurp sporter (swedish mauser) in 30-06, put a nikon prostaff scope on it and BAM (BAM BAM), got my first moose last fall. 100yd shot on a lady moose ;) Works like a charm and cost about 700$ total (400$ for the rifle+shipping, 250$ for the scope, installation and sling, 15$ for a case + a couple of boxes of ammo...)

If (IF) you want a moose gun the 30-06 is a great choice with the right bullet it will due the job just fine.I think we need to know a little more info though .Were do you hunt, long range, cut blocks, mountains, bush.I like 300 win 180grain nozzlers, there are o lot of package deals out there for under $1000.Looking at wholesale sports the savage package is $700 and you can get that in a 338.Remington has there model 700 stainless for $600 with calibers up to 300win mag.Browning X-bolt hunter package $850 in mag calibers.

I personally use my 6.5x55 swedish and it works fine, but my buddy got himself a nice Tikka synthetic lite in 30-06. I went over to his place and checked it and it seemed like a very nice gun, smooth action very light, he said the recoil wasn't bad and he got it with a nice bushnell 3200 for right around 1000 bucks

i'd suggest a brand new marlin XS7 in 30-06 or 270, or a stevens 200. both can be bought for under $400 and they are quality accurate rifles, and spend the other $600 on a very nice leupold scope. Not many guns shoot that bad really... the wise man spends more on his scope than his gun.

Yep, spend at least as much on the optics. I used enough low end stuff in the past and now it's all Leupold on my kids, even my diana air rifles. Clarity is a beautiful thing.
As far as a caliber, depends where you are. I shoot alot of wide open clear cuts and the moose don't like it when they see you sneaking up with a BOOMstick so 200 yds and up is normal for us, that being said, I'm tossing a 300 win mag., 180 grain hornady. Remington R3 recoil pad sucks up all the ouch factor with no problem.

i must admit i actually don't practice what i preach, i hunt with either a marlin 336 in 30-30 with a williams peepsight, or a parker hale .303 brit for bigger game, but most game in the pacific northwest is taken under 100yds, and i dont like the idea of carrying a really valuable gun/scope combo in the thick bush. anything farther than 100yds and i'd want a scoped rifle and i'd want my scope to work, therefore equal to the quality of the gun. but in a situation where i'd be taking long shots the odd's that i'd be trompsing through the bush is unlikely.

Damned near any legal centerfire is an adequate moose gun operator pending with range and anatomy taken into consideration.I find it humorous people think they need an African rifle............JMO.......Harold.......dumped truckloads with 6.5x55/160gr and .270 /130gr

blargon and mbogo3 have it right. Moose are big, but not particularly tough. Lots - lots - of them taken with a 30-30. If you have a 6.5mm Swede and can hit things with it, don't waste your time and money looking further.

As others have indicated, if you've got a 6.5x55 already, you may very well be set, as long as you are comfortable with your rifle and it is set up (i.e scope or not) to shoot at realistic hunting ranges you will encounter.

Shot placement is by far the most important thing. Caliber is completely secondary.

I'd say get the Stevens model 200 in 30-06. They're accurate and the butt ugly grey stock is tough as nails. Add a Bushnell Legend or the Prostaff scope. Shoot 180gr bullets and you'll have a rig that can take any moose in the bush. Within reason.
