Hello all,

I just joined the forum, after a recommendation from a friend that has been a gun aficionado for many years.

I got my license last year and now I am ready to get my first handgun. This friend took me to a range a few months ago, and I shot with his .40 cal (don't know the name) and I really liked it, although it had a bit more kick that I as expecting.

What would you recommend for a newbie, that wants to become a pro, and is willing to spend around $500 (used is fine).

I'm sure I will learn a lot from all the seasoned veterans in this forums.
Thanks.

i recommed any .22lr semi as it will allow you to shoot alot for really cheap
check out the

ruger mkIII or 22/45 series
wather p22
sig mosquito
browning buckmark

there are many more but i bleive these are the most common that you will find
you can get a .22lr conversion kit for most popular centerfire pistols aswell

If you want a 40 cal, check out the Baby Eagle at about $675. Most trouble free, precision built unit you can buy. If you want to use cheaper ammo, get a Ruger target 22 semi-auto.

Gun shopping is in some ways similar to motorcycle shopping for newbies.

Get some training, confidence and comfort.

Get the correct protective kit ..(eyewear and hearing protection).

Start small as in a good .22 cal target pistol and perhaps a 9mm. Learn how to shoot.

Then, step your way up in confidence, ability and price.

Good luck.

Depends, one gun at a time, I say go 9mm. It is more then 22 ammo, but it is more fun too. You can't go wrong with a 22, but just factor in that you will be buying a 9 or bigger soon. Truthfully, the right answer is probably that you will have a 9mm and a 45 and a 22 at some point and the order you get them doesn't matter that much. It is like saying, " what golf club should I buy, a putter or a 9 iron or a wedge?" The answer is, "yes."

If you are going to be shooting two guns at a time, then it is the .50 desert eagle or nothin'. That one is easy.

Most imortantly, welcome to the club :)

Thanks guys!

Thanks a lot guys! Lot's of great info.

I checked out the suggestions and I think I like the Sig Mosquito :dancingbanana:

The Norinco is really cheap but looks kinda 'cheap' :-(

I think I will start with a 9mm as suggested by some, but the Sig Mosquito 22LR looks nice and it's quite cheap.

Ohhh, so many choices... so little time! I am definitely starting a collection.

yes those tokarev are cheap try the NP-34 it gets good reviews and the price is not bad. I may buy one :)

if you like the sig, why not buy the 226 and a .22 conversion kit? a bit more money, but a lot of people say the mosquito isn't as high quality as its big brother. and its like having two pistols.

X4 on the Ruger Get the 22/45.
disassembly/assembly take less then a 1 min to do, When you know what you are doing.
They go $350 bran new. I got mine of EE in new condition for $300. You Cannot go wrong with this pistol, Most Accurate then all my pistol. always go bang and never jam. $20 for 500 rounds

Dont touch the Jamomatic Mosquito with a 40 ft pole. Every guy a saw at the range has returned them in less then 15 days. the only to they are good for is to learn to clear a jams. They sure have the look but are junk. Get the Sig then try a Ruger you will Regret your buy instantly.

If you get bored. you can buy a Nork later and will have 2 pistols for less then $700. The price of one Glock, M&P or a CZ.
This is the route I took and I belive it's the best one.

Another vote for 22 gets boring way too fast. Start with a centerfire. A slightly different suggestion, how about a revolver? A decent 586 is around your budget, 38spl ammo is inexpensive and light recoiling, 357mag ammo to quench the need for speed when you are ready.
