quiet guns

... I have a "357 Whisper" on a martini action....

Did you buy this "as is" (ie previously converted) or did you have it done to a rifle you already own? This just reminded me that I have a Cadet languishing in the safe that I've thought of having rebored to .357 mag., probably by Ron Smith as he seems to be the person to go to for reboring.

:) Stuart

ps- re Weldboss' comment, "who cares what the neighbours think?" I'd suggest it's just a common courtesy. If the neighbours are "antis" it might be a way to say hello and maybe dispel the myth of the "big bad guy with guns". We need all the good PR we can get! If they're not, they might appreciate the "heads up." If the neighbours are REALLY anti (Wendyantis), well, "better the devil you know..." At least their kids won't come by on Hallowe'en :p

I made some loads with Trail Boss and 90gr Speers for my 270. Puts them out 1600-1700fps. Way less than half the bang of the full on 57.2gr 4350 and a 110 VMax. Just about perfect for the apple eaters out the back door.

Well the less powder and the small the diameter of the bullet/bore and if kept subsonic you should be able to make it far less noticable - 7 grains of N320 with 150 grain bullet in 308 produced a quiet subsonic load for me.

Stock guns - like 44 special or 38 special or 45 acp will be subsonic - the old rook cartridges were typically 32 and smaller with little case capacity and long barrel to make a quiet close range non-disturbing gun - 22 short in say a 24 inch barrel would be nice and quiet - anything supersonic will be louder due to the shock wave caused by the bullet.

op said he don't roll his own...
so I'll echo the Hornet for a quiet killer but say this-
I'd use the .270...
if yer callin try to set up with the muzzle facing away from folks ;)
it's alot quieter behind the boom.

.300 Whisper

BE ready to pony up the cash for a custom, however.

ATRS has the reamer and is just waiting on barrels.

I have this straight from Peter at the shop, who I'm talking into building me a .300/221 Fireball AR upper for the novelty of it. That, and the fact that I can use all my existing AR15 mags with it. It might not make sense to anyone else, since I can't shoot the AR off-range and I can't suppress it... but leave me alone to my tinkering! :p

Re-barreling a .223 bolt action to .300 Whisper can't be that bad price-wise... I'd suggest giving ATRS a shout.

And if it's all in-close, a subsonic .308 projectile at 240 grains will still do a fair bit more damage than a .22 magnum...

Bang on the money Doc.

I'd like to try it one day. Reports are that hearing protection isn't required for the uber-heavy loads (as they are sub-sonic), or at least, no serious ear muffs...

Wrong, subsonic rifle cartridges like the 300 W still produce a muzzle blast of about 150 dB, which is just a wee bit quieter than a 9mm pistol. That is certainly enough noise to do your ears some damage.

Agreed - even with subsonics in the 300/221 (Whisper) it's still going to be plenty loud.

And the nice part is that with a bolt gun, it's far less finnicky (assuming you know what both your zero points are, and the respective drops) to go from subsonics to full-house loads... full-house 300/221 loads are more like 7.62x39 ballistics and work just fine.

With an AR15, a guy needs an adjustable gas block to go between subs/supers - luckily, JP enterprises makes just such a product... ;)

A lot of fellas in the US are using suppressed AR's in .300/221 shooting subsonics for feral hog control. With a good load, a guy can drop 3 or 4 hogs before they get skiddish - I've seen vids!

Up here, sadly, we have to keep it as the 300/221 Lautenboomer... :jerkit:
