So when you buy a shotgun with an internal mag, its blocked to two rounds...does it legally have to be blocked to 2 rounds at all times or just when hunting?

thanks

The plug is there for hunting purposes (see your provincial hunting regs for mag limits while hunting). For purposes other than hunting, semi-auto shotguns can have a maximum mag capacity of 5 rounds and there is no limit for pump guns. Feel free to remove the plug when not hunting!

You're best to check your provincial hunting regulations.

+1 Do believe that in Ontario you're limited to two rounds while hunting, regardless of what you're going after. This could also have repercussions for those going out to the bush/gravel pit to do some shooting.

I suppose this is meant to give the poor birds a chance.
I wonder though... could you carry three shotguns each with a mag cap of 2 each, giving you 6..?

depends,

i shoot in the field of a local farmer who built me
a sand pit with his loader.

the field is surrounded by woods full of game.

i have been visited a few times by the police and
conservation officers both during hunting seasons
and between hunting seasons.

it's hard for them to say i'm hunting when i have 10-12 guns
with me, a few hundred rounds of ammo and 4 target stands with
a few dozen targets.

they check to see that my guns are registered, that my magazines
are plugged ( 20 & 30 rounders m14 & cz858 ) that the backstop is
sufficient , that i follow the city regulations on firearms discharge
and that i have the permission to shoot on the land
( i carry with my registration certificates a letter signed by the land owner
giving me permission to both target shoot and hunt on his land )

they then tell me to be safe and to have a nice day.

some of them often ask if they can try and shoot some of the guns,
wich i am always happy to let them.

the more that are on our side, the better it is for us.

I'm glad that you've had good luck with the local LEO and COs but you can technically be charged for poaching even if you don't have a weapon with you at all.

Found this definition in the Ontario hunting regs;

HUNTING:
Includes lying in wait for, searching for, being on the trail of, pursuing,
chasing or shooting at wildlife, whether or not the wildlife is killed,
injured, captured or harassed. You need a hunting licence to do any of
these things, except where the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act , 1997 states otherwise.

Now as long as no animals are visible in the immediate area you should be fine but this definition means that nature lovers trying to photograph an animal could be considered to be "hunting" it.

yeah,
but that's for ontario

i'm in quebec,
every conservation officers i've encounter has said to me
i was kosher as long as i did not shoot any animals.

as far as i know ontario has some of the most restrictives
regulations . they consider you to be hunting as soon as you
are with a gun outside of a shooting range. they don't like
sand pit, gravel pit, field or bush target shooting.

while in quebec, the regulations are less restrictives.

They say that you must not have no more than a combined 3 rounds of shells in your shotgun for hunting, because:

If you shoot at the same bird 3 times, then if you were to still be missing it, and need to fire a 4th round at the bird, then the bird would be so far out of range that it won't be a ethical shot, if you hit it. Atleast thats how I was explained it by a instructor.

The way it was explained to me is: Its more for migratory birds as they have a very long distance to travel up and down North America. Its to help control excessive losses to the flocks as they make their way. If everyone had a Saiga 12 ga. with 30 rd. drum, the birds would be extinct before they made it to Canada. To me this law makes sense, it helps conserve migratory bird populations while still giving everyone a fair go at them. I dont agree with placing a 3 round limit on native game birds. Grouse will wait for you to have a sandwhich while you reload, theyre not going anywhere.

Far as I can find in the Alberta wildlife act, 3 rounds of shot for migratory game birds. This make sense. But when I have challenged Fish and Wildlife on, how many rounds is legal for hunting Big game, Rabbits or Coyotes with a shotgun. They don’t have a clue! But it is legal to hunt grouse with a 22 (10 to 50 round mag) and hunt big game with a 50Cal rifle so long as the bullets are soft point.

That's awesome, man! Setting a great example for a positive shooting image.

Also, that is a wicked setup you have... I wish I knew some property owners that would do that for me!
