What are the things that YOU look for / require for a hunting boot to be considered "Good".

I keep reading "get good boots" and "dont buy cheap boots".

So explain to me what features are worth paying extra for.

Thx

me personally, they have to be water proof, relatively supportive for your ankles, if they get water in them they have to be able to stay warm, some guys need light boots but i can manage witha littel weight if i have to. I personally use Muck Boots, my feet fit really well in them.

For me the most important thing if your hunting in the mountains is ankle support and good grip. Yes insulation is important but when you're working hard, your tootsies don't get cold. Waterproof or very water resistant is very very important to me as well. You know what a good boot is though? The one that feels the most comfortable on your particular foot. For me that's Irish Setter's in EEE width, but for you it's gonna be something else. You gotta get in touch with your female side, and embrace going to the boot store and trying on every damn boot that you even remotely think you will like...it's the only way to know what is a 'good boot'...cause you will know it the instant your foot goes into it.

How high of an ankle is good, I tried on a few pair the other day, and some were like work boots, just above the ankle, and others were about 4 inches above the ankle.

They both felt equally comfy, I guess the higher boot would be better in deeper snow.

Waterproof, fairly soft soles as I hunt areas with alot of rock, and good ankle support. My boots have to have really good arch support because I have ridiculously high arches.
Rocky boots have been good for me apart from one trip where the motorcycle I was using wouldn't run worth a damn and the kickstarter eventually punched through the sole. I got them warrantied though!

Fit.

Not all feet are the same shape. Not all boot/shoe manufacturers build to the same shape.

Some boot makers build their boots for a foot that isn't at all like mine, so it doesn't matter how well they build those boots or what materials they use. I have seen some Rocky boots that appear to be quite well built with decent quality materials, but I don't bother trying on that brand anymore, because they never fit my feet.

I've never been especially impressed with the build quality of Timberland boots, and they don't last me a very long time, but Timberland thinks feet are shaped the way mine actually are. So I find Timberland boots fit me the best of all the assembly line boots I've ever tried (the best fitting footwear of any type I have ever had is a pair of motorcycle boots that were made by an English boot maker to whom I sent an tracing on paper of the outline of my foot.) I can always find a good fit in New Balance running shoes, too, because they also think feet are shaped like mine.

The higher boot will offer much better ankle support and therefore you won't see as much muscle and bone strain when climbing hills (particularly while coming down) because the boot is doing some of that work for you. My boots come up to about 5" below my knee and I love them there...great for support, but not too high.

what are some decent wide fiting brands of boots? I have a hell of a time finding comfortable boots because most arent wide enough. I then end up buying boots a size bigger then i need them and thats not the most comfortable thing to hike around in.

What kind of boots do you have? I've been looking for a pair similar to yours but haven't been able to.

I depends on the hunt for me. For waterfowl, I use Muck boots (fancy neoprene/rubber boots) since I won't be doing alot of walking. But when big game hunting, I need a good hiking type boot as we do alot of walking. Ankle support and grip are what I look for.

I like my Cabelas Outfitter Series. Waterproof, leather upper, good support, excellent tread, and decent insulation. For me, if I stop moving it wouldn't matter if I had 2 sleeping bags wrapped around my feet - they'd get cold.

I tried to order a pair of Danners but after I received the 2nd pair that were still too narrow, I gave up. I don't have duck feet, either.
