New Sharpshooter Rifle Added to Army’s Arsenal

:confused:I thought Alberta Tactical Rifle was making & selling a long range precision rifle in .338 Lapua to the Canadian forces

As already mentioned PGWDTI, not Alberta Tactical Rifle, but those are to replace the C3 sniper rifle, a semi auto marksman rifle would fulfill a different function. There isn't (far as I know) any specific training or doctrine laid out for a designated marksmen, so until someone lays out how they're to be trained and utilized (section level, platoon level, indepedent dets that get assigned to units as needed) it's doubtful that we'd buy any, and if we did, it would likely turn into a clusterf---. I had heard there AR-10s in service, for sniper teams, though I'm not sure if they were bought for testing, or a single tour, or just a plan someone had that never went through.

KevinB, among others, have made some posts on army.ca and I think here as well about implementing marksmen at section or platoon level with something like a 16 inch .308 AR, or a 5.56 marksman rifle. I personally think a section marksman with an SR-25, OBR, or one of the .308 ARs would add a decent capability for hitting targets out past the range of a C7, and with some barrier penetration as well. Definately worth looking into.

Nice to see more and more armies looking into them, and hope to see the British putting them to good use.

Someone dig up some pics of the CF with AR10 variants in Fort Bliss for this lad from Wainhole.

even NZ is getting knights SR25's .. whos running your army !?

Had them for a while now.

I think the Canadian military needs to do what the cash strapped NZDF has done for years, "borrow" them from the US forces. New Zealand magpies nicking shiny toys since ages ago.

We've been using AR-10s for a few years already. The Knight's rifle isn't particularly special.

I think a lot of folks might be surprised if they knew just how MUCH new equipment the troops have got their hands on since the 'useless' Harper government came to power.

Remember, under Powerful Pierre and Comrade Cretin, the forces were starved of new equipment for nearly 40 years, not to mention everything that even looked like a decent rifle being destroyed. Oh well, when half your policies are made in the Kremlin, it's good enough if your good friends in 'Russia, China, Cuba, somewhere like that' (to quote Pierre) have all THEY want.

Me, I'm just hoping that we can keep the Gummint that we have now, in power for a few more years, mebbe even with an actual majority so they can REALLY do something...... like get rid of that idiotic long-guns registry.

Yes, the AR-10 is in service, but not in the same role. We have been asking for years for a semi auto rifle with a bit more reach and punch then the current C-7A2s. It would be issued to the Pl Wpns Det. We even asked for the return of the C-1 from war stores, to no avail (yes, not the perfect wpn for this, but better than nothing). The AR-10 is strictly for sniper teams. But now we get into the politics of the situation- It would mean changing the ORBAT of the Platoon. The snipers (not the teams thenselves, but Ottawa, CTC, etc) see this as undermining their job, and will only authorize the issue of the AR-10 to sniper qualified pers. I have seen the men themselves mounting bipods and better optics on their C-7s to unofficially fullfil the role as the "designated marksman" or "sharpshooter"- a task completly different than sniping.

Not Fort Bliss (or any other kind of bliss for that matter) but how about:

These photos are public to the best of my knowledge, if anyone knows (as opposed to guesses) any reason they shouldn't be here, PM me

Lots of miss information here. Firstly the AR10 has been in service in Afghanistan since 2003. So we have had a 308 precision rifle in service...before it became in vogue. The Infantry decided that the rifle was best employed with the snipers rather than weapons dets. I observed the process first hand. It was decided that it made best use of the weapon. The infantry initial decided against the designated marksman but has reviewed this a couple of times since the introduction of the AR10. Originally the AR10 was IOR item and was not going to be life cycle managed. It is currently being managed while a decision is made on the permanent replacement and employment doctrine. Again, who specifically will carry it and the role played is being decided by the infantry. It is not CTC or Ottawa making the call....but a number of boards, manned by infantry across the board. I made a presentation to a similar board a couple years back on another item.

For record, the FNs are long since destroyed. There are none to request for.

So in short, we have a precision semi auto 308 in service. The debate is how we employ it. The infantry branch however is the gate keeper and in the end will decide the doctrine for the employment. From what I recall there was little support from the three regiments for a designated marksman at the platoon level. There was support for a precision semi auto 308.
