Best most easily available shotgun slugs for smoothbore?

Second part of question: why is Canada so poor in selection? Are people not discerning enough or is it a plot by government to leave us only with Foster slugs?

Down east in NS, Hnatuiks sells Challenger slugs (confirmed). I am sure other Ontario/Quebec sports stores sell the Challenger, but I have not spent enough time looking for them in most of these eastern sporting goods stores.
IIRC Accuracy Plus in Peterbourgh sells Brenneke Rottweil Classic slug.
Moving west now, WSS in Saskatoon (unconfirmed they sell) WSS in Edmonton (confirmed) also have Brenneke slugs sometimes in stock. Italian Sports store in Vancouver sells the Brenneke too. TSE Sports in Calgary is presently in the long drawn out process, (government b/s) to import Brenneke slugs from Brenneke USA. Part two question, I think most hunters/users prefer the legal option of a rifle for hunting big game if they have the choice, and yes and maybe yes, but I think it's a mostly a question of economics. (most Canadians, unless hunting critters that can hurt you back, choose fosters slugs as thier first option, or go with a big enough/powerful enough rifle otherwise) Whether we like it or not, fact is most decent hunting rifle cartidges, easily outclass/out range any smoothbore shotgun slug, and are therefore the top choice, if the hunter/user has the option to choose. And $$$....fosters are cheap!
Brenneke/Challenger slug market is a very small for most provinces, other than our north country.
Mostly for wilderness wanderers or outdoor persons, pursuing something other than hunting.
(IE-geologists, forestry workers, prospectors, etc etc etc)

government plot all the way dude.......oh look, there's my tin-foil hat.... guess i better dust that thing off......

Thanks for this! If I wind up SOL am I better off with rifled barrel/saboted slugs rather than Fosters? Do you think a 180 grain .308 would outclass a Foster slug at 25 yards?

Sabotted slugs and rifled shotgun barrels are a different breed yet again.
As a general rule, sabot slugs are mostly designed to shoot deer at a distance longer than one would use foster slugs, in a slug shooting shotgun of your choice. I'm not saying it will not work in the defensive role, it certainly leaves buckshot or any other slug, now out of the window as second/third options. As well with a saboted slug, one no longer has that big, .73 calibre, full bore, chunk of lead that has a great game stopping reputation, at claws/fangs in your face range. As to your other question, well that depends on alot of things I think. Many others might say the repeating 12 gauge shotgun & slug/with some sort of front-rear sights, is the top performer, to stop attacking wildlife, dependant on the range you engage them at, and yes, I agree it probably would be, a prefered choice for myself, if close up and personal. Don't let my first post confuse you now. The .308 with 180s has a much longer effective range, and therefore more suitable for hunting big game.
IMHO the 12 gauge slug, is a better self-defence round, at 25 yards.
