Qagvik(Wolverine) Defense choice ...

Ummmm, Wolverines are the largest member of the weasel family averaging from 22-34in long and 22-55lbs in weight, kinda like a medium sized dog. They are not known to attack humans on a regular basis. I'm thinking a Louisville Slugger or some other kind of "puppy pounder". Ammo is getting expensive after all:p. Just a minute, was'nt somebody on the latest bear thread talking about tomahawks when things really get down and dirty.:)
 
While not something that we're all worried about getting eaten by, the wolverine ia a nasty bugger if he's pissed off. A friend of mine did get attacked this winter by one....he might chime in here as he's a member... He said it was half way up his leg before he could think. All he managed to do was backhand the beast accross the chops with his hatchet that he was carrying...apparently that was enough for the critter as it didn't come back again. He said it shook hin up quite a bit..all teeth, claws and nastly attitude.
 
Personally, I think a 12 Ga is too hard on the pelt. I prefer to slip a loop around its neck and throttle it. This can probably get interesting with a Wolverine, though, so if you try this method, be sure to have someone come along with a video camera to film the action, because I'm sure all of us would enjoy seeing it. When I was a kid I ran a small trapline. While applying the throttle method to a nice Ermine, the little critter sank its fangs right to the gums into my thumb while I was trying to get the loop around his neck. Weasels and Wolverines can get rude when you are trying to throttle them. All this to say that if you are attacked by the Ermine's bigger brother, the Wolverine:
a) it's a bonus, because you get another nice pelt to sell but,
b) be careful slipping the loop around his neck, maybe you should keep your mitts on while doing it.:)

Now I don't want to see this thread get hijacked onto the subject of what the best gun is for Weasel defense, so if anyone wants to pursue that subject, I'd suggest starting a new thread on that one.:cool:

p.s. had a friend shooosst one that showed up while he was skinning a tuktu(caribou) ... 1st shot pissed it off, 2nd shot really pissed it off ... 3rd shot well placed killed it ... shot it 3 times with his mini-14 .223 ... serious close range ... JEBUS :D

Not to be too cheeky but howabout the rifle you hunting with when you made your kill. Other than that I'd use a shotgun

If not, whatever killed the tuktu will work. Let the bugger advance to the kill and you retreat to create distance. 1 clean headshot and it's wolverine slippers for the Mrs.
 
AAAAAAAAHAHAHA love it ... there's so many bloody BEAR DEFENSE threads I had to throw this one out there ... seriously they're mean buggers them qagviks ... and smart to boot ... here's a scenerio last year with my girlfriends father tracking one ...

We drove our snowmobiles for almost 20 miles zigzagging and even in 2 loops as these things wander all over the FN place ... came to a stop no more tracks ... shook my head ... look at my girlfriends father as he laughed and said he grew wings and flew away ... FARK that ... got a shovel from my qamutiq and started digging where his tracks stopped ... nothing ... so looked to my left and right as we were at the top of a small valley ... walked 100 yards left over rocks and stil no tracks ... same thing to the right ... WTF ... girlfriends father said look where his tracks stop once again ... so I inspected and noticed a light indent in the snow going down the valley hill ... damn thing slid on his belly ... found his tracks back into the rocks again ... damn thing was probably laughing while watching me look all over the place ... started to get dark so we left ... DAMN WOLVERINES! :D

Knowing weasels, they'll go straight for your balls, or your neck, whatever is closer.

Wolverine(Qagvik) has been known to drive a grizzly off a kill.

They are fairly small, but strong and fast, and, they have powerful jaws capable of snapping a moose femur.

Also like other weasels, they are always hungry...

Thankfully, they are rare. And, like all wild animals,(yes, even bears, coyotes and gophers, but not their zombified counterparts) they would probably not look for a fight if it could be avoided.

I would love to see one someday, but preferably, from a distance!

Small, but tough, i'd recommend anything in a handgun, shottie, or rifle with a fairly heavy bullet(over 100grns), around 1000fps or better.

Of course if hes already climbing your leg, i hope you put your chainmail undies on!

Don't wolverines smell, a bit like their skunk cousins?
