First off id like to say im fairly new with handguns. I've been to the range and shot a bunch of different guns and the one i liked best by far was the 92fs. I liked the tight sight picture vs lets say the m&p and i was most accurate with it. Im looking at buying a 96d however and am wondering how similar are the 92fs and the 96d other then just caliber ? Is it basically the same frame with a larger tube or is it a totaly different gun. What parts can be interchangable ie grips or mags ?

I own both and they are virtually the same. Haven't had the need to do any repairs in the 20 odd years that I have owned the pair, so not sure what internal parts are the same. Grips appear to be the same.

Things like mags and grips are interchangeable. I'm not sure about how many of the internal parts are, or if you'd even strip it down that far.

Some folks will say the slide assembly from a 92 can be swapped onto a 96 frame, but I haven't tried that with mine yet.

Keep in mind the 96D will have a long double action trigger pull for each round fired. On the upside it's a consistent pull, but it is very long and heavy. It's the gun I learned to shoot on, but I don't really shoot it that often anymore because of that trigger pull.

That said you can get some real bargain prices on police trade in 96D's. Usually the full size models, but there are also some Centurion models out there too.

DAO would suck imo. I own a Beretta M9A1 (Hey Bollox!!) and I usually fire it in SA even on the first round by manually cocking the hammer.

Mags for sure. I may own a few 96 mags.... They fit right in my M9.. for show purposes only..

I was at the gun store today and asked about Beretta 96 mags. They had some in stock by Mec-gar. I didn't buy it, was $50 bucks (is that a decent price?) but probably will in future, as I understand that these mags can take 9mm and because of the smaller size of the caliber, the mag can hold 14 rounds instead of 10, and that using this mag with 14 rounds in it in my M9A1 9mm is totally legal, as the law states that the mag's 10 round capacity is rated for the caliber and weapon that the mag was designed for, and not the gun it is used in. Can you confirm?

Yep. Confirmative..

To the OP, I think the Beretta 92fs is an excellent pistol. It was my first handgun and I still own it, its awesome and shoots great even long range. It shoots every ammo I have tried in it and has not experienced any stoppages except inside the first 30-40 rounds, which I attribute to my poor cleaning of the gun after I first got it. If you get one, get a gun cleaning kit, run some solvent soaked patches down the barrel before first firing, and you will be laughing. The ability to legally use 14+1 rounds in it is sweet as well, as reloading sucks.
