Hi,

Does having your barrel ported, or installing ported extended choke tubes, make a noticeable difference in the recoil felt?

Is it worth the cash?

"...In my cheek!..." Sounds like the stock is too short for you. Porting does reduce the felt recoil, but it's not exactly cheap to have done. Won't fix a short stock either.

Most times cheek slap is caused by incorrect pitch. As a test ... put 2 flat washers between the recoil pad and the wood on the top screw that holds the recoil pad to the stock. See if that makes a difference. If it does you need to put pitch spacer(s) on the gun. Here are a sample of pitch spacers ...

Interesting.... I always wondered about this as I have 1 12G that hurts in the cheek to shoot, but my other 12G are fine. I'm going to give this a try!

As well as dropping the comb with the washer on the top screw, you can also try adding a shim to the side of the buttplate nearest your body to introduce a bit of cast off. I just finished fitting my new Maxus and ended up using the shim that dropped the comb and added cast off. Now it fits great.

Sore cheek, to me, indicates that you're having a hard time getting your eye down behind the rib. That probably means insufficient drop at comb. You likely need to modify the existing stock to drop the comb, or install an adjustable comb (or get a different shotgun that fits you properly).

Assuming you're a right-handed shooter, it could also be a factor of insufficient cast off that's making it hard for you to get your eye in position behind the rib.

Either way, the sore cheek comes from having it pressed into the stock too hard, not likely because of the recoil. All of this assumes that you're shooting target loads through a gun that weighs at least 6 pounds, not magnum loads through a coach gun.:D
