Well I just bought a 2007 Norc M14S off the EE forum, I think for what I payed and what I got I am happy with the purchase. I guess the main reason I wanted to make a post here was the fact that I am not as versed with the M14 as some other firearms, I figured here I might get some good feed back on what I have bought, whats wrong with it and how I can go further with the build. It does have the nice ping when you rack it and I is Headspace @ 1.6390". For starters I will be installing the Harris bipod ASAP, as well I will be getting a cheek piece installed on both the M14 and my Rem 700 this weekend.

Upgrades updated as I do them:
-Stainless steel oprod guide & upgraded spring
-USGI fiberglass stock, vented hand guard, selector and retaining pin mods, cheek riser, bottom rail, bipod stud installed by SMITHTAC
-Fabsports Rubber Buttstop
-Marstar M14 Scope mount
-Burris 3200 Tactical
-Burris Zee rings
-Harris Bipod
-Headspaced @ 1.6390"

Welcome to the M14 addiction. You are always welcome to come up to my location for an M14 visit! :D

Upper handguard is loose, eh? You should see/hear the racket my USGI handguard makes... That's normal for an M14. The Norc M14's are built to tighter (read: less rattling) specs and they got that part right.

How about a range report?

Did / have you greased all the rails, lugs, raceways and then hammer hooks?

Thanks for the good words and info, I guess I will have to learn to deal with the racket just like everyone else then :). It does seem like the rear tab will not seat properly to hold the hand rail down though, i cant push it down enough to get it to click into place and it keeps coming back up. As for being greased I should have mentioned that I will be picking some up and greasing it before I do any shooting, it looks like it has been greased where the bolt roles but the seller did mention to do it as it has not been shot in a few months.

Just Add Bullets!
Fix the bedding on your stock & buy a scope.
Most importantly vist a Hungry or M14Doctor clinc. For a better understanding of the "Pinging" effect!

I looking for a scope right now to go with my 30mm Burris Zee rings, hopefully for around $300-$400 and something with tactical knobs.

I am also hoping to find instructions on how to install my Harris bipod on the USGI stock, it came uninstalled with just the loose pieces.

Hungry here: Tactical scope, eh? For around the $ 400 price point, I've had success with the Falcon Menace 4.5 x 18 x 56mm. There are many more around the price point. Great optics for the price and one day when your game (and wallet$$) evolves, you can upgrade your glass. Falcon scopes (I've got 3 of them) can be found at CGNutz board sponsors like www.allengunworks.com or Frontier. Their banners are up above. :D

I have the Falcon Menace 10x14x44mm on my Rem 700 and love it, I would definitely buy another one if I came across a nice used one in the EE section. I have been offered a Bushnell 4200 elite 4-16x50mm for within my price range, however it is a little big for what I need on this rifle and it doesn't come with the tactical knobs which I find to be an overall better design.

Does anyone have experience with the Falcon 1.5-5x30 SIR scope especially on an M14?

Buy some ammo....LOTS of ammo:)

GC

Better yet reload my own.

Here's a link on how to install the Harris Bi pod on the M1A.

http://www.dighawaii.com/ProjectsPage/Harris Bipod Installation.htm

Try removing your gas cylinder to slide the hand guard into the groves.

Thanks for the link but that looks like it's for a Harris that attaches to the knob like normal, this one seems like it screws right into a tapped part you install inside the stock. It doesn't look like a normal Harris that's missing part though, all in all it looks like I will need a M14 manual ASAP.

File something down or build something up with JB Weld. One or the other.

There is a trick to pinch up the tabs on the front ferrule to lift the front of the handguard to hold it more securely. The trick for the clip is to mask it with masking tape on the outside and build up a bearing surface that holds it more snuggly.

Now, the thought occurs to me that you have an M1 Garand clip when you need an M14 clip.

I clips in properly on one the right side just not on the left side, how can you tell which clip is which?

So I managed to get some stuff figured out, fixed and installed today, tonight I will be greasing it up and tomorrow the stock is getting repainted black. I am also in the process of buy a Falcon Menace 1.5-5x30mm SIR for a nice price, I love the other Falcon I have so I was an easy choice.

First off I figured out that for the loose handrail I needed to shave some of the stock down on the left side, it was just high enough to not allow the tab to lock into place. I took a very small wood plain and took off just a bit at a time until the fit was right, once I did that it holds perfectly tight now.

Then I when out to Tac Pro in Thornhill and had cheek rests installed on the M14 and my Rem 700, dealing with Steve was great and he showed me some very interesting M14 stuff while he installing them.

The next curious thing I found is in regards to the stock which was said to be a USGI, we have both a real USGI glass stock and a Norinco wood stock to compare it to. It is obviously real wood and not the Norinco one at all, it actually looks exactly like the USGI glass one especially in the mag well. I have seen USGI wood ones for sale, could this be one and what the deal with them?

For the bipod I figured I am going to either buy a new Harris with all the parts and the proper M14 swivel stud, or I can try and install a plug with the proper inner thread and install the one I have as a non quick release. Do you think a good JBWeld type product would be strong enough to hold a metal plug in the stock and still be able to keep the bipod screwed in place shot after shot with a .308?

you fubared the BC stock I sold ya!
nooooooooooo, had I known, I would've shipped you the lace on cheek rest I used on it

I've tried out a few strap and lace on style ones and they all interfere with the place for your hand to sit, believe me I was worried about that so I did a few test fits before the drilling happened. The other reason I went this route is that I have very bad Arthritis and I am doing Precision long range shooting from my belly, the only way I can lift my neck to the level of the scope and leave it there is to have a rise on the stock. So all in all I needed a cheek rise with no bottom and this was the obvious choice, I will paint it black to mach the rest of the rifle though.

P.S. Thanks for the offer on the scope, however it is just a little to big for what I want and I found something that works for me for less cash.

np, since we had dealt before I tought I'd ask.

I had a plastic cheek riser like you do but from DWP, not the tacpro one. I just sold it, I'm gonna be performing a folder modification to the fiberglass stock. AAAAAAAnyway, it was a bit too glossy for my liking so I sanded it down with some fine grit paper and applied couple coats of black matte krylon. And well, lets just say things as they are, you will never match the exact same level of black that's on the metal. You also run the risk of having people look at you and you have no idea why until you get home and realize half your face is black LOL
I say keep it like that, it looks good (if you were talking about the one on the bolt gun...)

I have been doing some reading in regards to the wood stock I have, I looks like it could very well be a Springfield M1A stock. It seems they made wood ones with the selector filled and with out the two circles on it either, does this sound at all right? I also picked up another real Harris bipod from a friend, so now asap I will be buy the Sadlak bipod mount and a rubber butt plate from Fabsports. Does anyone know of somewhere that sells similar mounts to the Sadlak one only less expensive?

Well I was just window shopping on the EE section and I saw a real nice USGI fiberglass stock setup, so I bought it lol. Basically it's a USGI fiberglass stock with a vented hand guard painted flat black, the selector and retaining pin mods have been done and stock comes with a cheek riser and bottom rail with bipod stud installed by SMITHTAC.

Once it comes in I will remove the wood one paint it and put it up for sale here, what are the Springfeild M1A stocks valued at?
