Making 410 brass

repost

I then loaded the casing with 3.9 Grains of clays and 4 38 caliber round balls 82 grains each. Plus some felt pads that I bought from Canadian Tire. The second firing with the lead balls blew the casing out to fill the chamber.

The balls that I had casted stayed in place with just friction/.

Please note that no gunnutz were harmed during any of these experiments. Also for anyone thinking about making a cartridge with a regular bullet for a 410 it probably will not work. I spent 50 bucks in a mold and 40 caliber factory crimp. The crimper ruins the 410 casing and a 39 caliber bullet necessary to pass though the choke will not remain seated in a 410 casing. Been there done that.

jasonburnsdundee, a few questions for ya. Did you anneal the brass before you fireformed the brass ? And if the 38 cal. balls stayed in place with friction why wouldn't a cast .390 bullet ? What did you do with the mold that you bought ? Jack

NO I Did not anneal the brass and I did split a few cases during fireforming. A 39 cal will stay in place no problem, it just might not pass through the barrel. `check the diameter of your barrel. I sold itm but it was simply a lee black powder double cavity mold. I have the attention span of a hamster. I played with 410m experimented. Got it to work well then sold it and amused myself with another project.

Did they split or Rupture like mine did.I had 3 out of 50 rupture on the second firing and that's 3 too many.I trashed all 50 and Do Not Consider it Safe

Upon loading my once cream of wheat partially form shells with shot some split and some formed %90+. I see some people refering to the Enfield shotguns, and I should clarify that I am using .303 brit brass to form standard .410 shotshells for use in a standard break action civilian .410 shotgun. I havent given up but, I think I may invest in a used Lee loader for my plastic hulls. I'll rely on .303 forming for a day when no more emptie hulls are to be had. I may give .444 Marlin a try if I come across a few 1x fired.

The Indian .410 round properly is termed the .410 Musket. I twas chambered in obsolete, reworked, otherwise condemned Lee-Enfields which were used for guard duty and prison-guard work: made a big noise and the ball wouldn't penetrate 3 or 4 guys the way a .303 bul;let would. Worked.

Their ammo was made up on .303 casings which had been manufactored but not yer loaded (primed only). This was easy because the .303 Cordite round had the Cordite inserted BEFORE the case was tapered and necked.

You CAN make .410 Musket from .303 brass. I do it all the time. Proble(s) as far as hunting is concered are: (1) small diameter for commercial chamber, (2) usually won't load because rim thickness on a .303 is .063" or very close to it. Commercial shotshell rims are a LOT thinner. You CAN cut back the rims on a lathe, but you still end up with a 2-1/4" shell in a much longer chamber..... a shell which could split in some chanbers.

For commercial guns, .30-40 Krag well could be a better answer, but, likely, you still will have to thin the rims. Got a lathe?

MAGTECH sells brand-new .410 brass casings and they really aren't all that expensive.

BTW, they also make 24, which is fine for conversion to .577 Snider, and 32-bore, which you can convert to .50-70.

They do have a Canadian distributor. Their brass shells run about a buck a pop.

Hope this helps.

Buffalo Arms needs all the import paperwork to send us brass now. I am rather annoyed about that.

On a more positive note, there is a Canadian supplier that carries that type of thing. Bilzor I've dealt with and I've heard that Epps might stock that type of thing also.

Actually, Buffalo Arms can no longer ship pistol or rifle brass to Canada, but they can ship shotgun brass, no problem....They sell Magtech brass, which is excellent stuff, and .410 shotshell brass is selling for $ 22.79 US for a box of 25.....
