I picked up an old cooey 840 and it came with 2 barrels in 12 and 410 guage. I was told by the gent you could buy them that way. I have another cooey here in a newer version in 20. Is he right as I've changed the barrels and everything lines up. Can I just interchange the barrels and have both guages? The gun is in good shape, the blueing needs work but for 60 bucks with a hardshell case I couldn't go wrong.

Be sure to send the gun to a gunsmith to check out the fit of each barrel to the receiver. I've "bought 'n shot Cooey" and Winchester ss shotguns since the '60s and have never heard of barrel sets being sold with a single receiver, particularly barrels of different gauges.

I've got a Cooey with 12,16,20 & 410 barrels. They were available from Cooey as I had relatives that worked there but were special order for matching barrels sets and not many were made. The set I'm working on is of my own doing and some barrels will fit just fine and others need to be fitted. If the barrel will fit and you can open the action with the forend on your pretty much good to go unless there's alot of space between the barrel and receiver which could give you blow back.1 barrel I had would work without the forend and with it it would not open so some fitting was needed.
Just my 0.02$

I'll have it checked by a gunsmith next time I'm over, They both have the same writing on each barrell, only difference is the guage size. Also I'm only concerned the the 410. Everything fits snug and works identical to the 12 but the forearm stock piece has play around where the barrel fits but that would be normal if it had to fit different barrels as the 410 tapers off so much that far up.

Well I just went through my stash of single shotguns, I have 2 others, winchester 20 and an old cooey 12. Took them all apart and compared the shotguns to the newest one I bought. Just looking quickly they look the same. But the barrells on all are different except the 2 barrell combo I just purchased. I tried interchanging the barrells and recievers but they would not go. The recievers are slightly different on all of them except the combo like I said. I did get the 20 guage winchester barrell to fit the barrell combo reciever but there was clearance between the barrell and reciever when closed but the combo barells wouldn't fit the winchester 20 reciever. I'm satified now they they are a match to the receiver. Thanks for the help

Wanna part with the 12 gauge barrel???? ;)

I am trying to remove the barrel from my Model 84 so that I can clean up years of neglect from previous owner. Anyone out there able to help me with instructions? I don't want to hurt it. Previous owner said he bought it in early '50s. Thanks in advance.

I have fitted barrels from one to another with little or no problem. Big difference is the forend hanger difference between the 84 and 840.

I have found the early Model 840 to have the same forend hanger as the Model 84.The later Model 840 shotguns had a different hanger.
