It's not really anything spectacular, but hopefully the pics and commentary should entertain. :)

I've owned ARs for a few years, and knew I wanted to do ...something... with one, but I was never really sure what. And then some guy posted this thread. I don't shoot for a living, so doing the exact same thing didn't interest me. But it did give me an idea of what I wanted to do, though.

After literally forever (mainly reading for months on end, and waiting for a rifle that never came) I finally finished(more or less) my rifle, though I've been far too busy(lazy) to post about it until now. Regrettably, I never got any before pics, so all you get is the after... it started as this.

BEFORE YOU ASK, it shoots how you would expect a Noveske to.

Also: When I started this, a lot of things that are available now, weren't. So yeah, there are a few things I might've done differently.

INFO:
So it's a complete N4 Recce with the following:
- Larue free-float 12" rail over a LaRue low-profile gas-block, Magpul XT covers (I prefer the surface of these)
- Smith Vortex FH (I ordered it with an A2 birdcage then changed my mind later)
- front and rear Troy BUIS
- LaRue FUG
- Trijicon ACOG TA31F in a LaRue mount
- Magpul MIAD
- Magpul UBR
- (sometimes) Harris bipod on a LaRue mount(the bipod is not normally on the rifle!)(this thing is already pretty heavy for most, so I like having this quick release for when I bring new/weaker shooters to the range)
- BFG Vickers 2pt sling (I'm trying to get ahold of this or this to run the sling out further on the rail, though... is cqbservices out of the hospital yet???)

Final cost was $ASTRONOMICAL

According to the bathroom scale 10.2lbs unloaded, without the bipod. Also, Noveske threw in a stripped lower.



I admit, I absolutely love LaRue rails, and though I am an obvious fanboy, the main reason is the profile of them (SUPER narrow, female-hand friendly). The only rails that come close are Daniel Defense's offerings, and their bottom rail still rides a lot further out from the barrel. And LaRue's rails are relatively lightweight compared to many other makers.

Right now im not sure what I want to do for a light setup. I know I don't want a pressure switch. Ive got this 6P ripoff that has a BEAUTIFUL anodized finish in some s**tty mount I had lying around... but I wouldn't be happy with this at all long term. Suggestions??? I'd rather have something with crazy long runtime than high output... or maybe variable something like the Surefire E2L I have. Either way the light is just a toy for me right now.



Some green laser in a LaRue offset mount. Just for playing more than anything. I'll probably just steal the mount to put a 6P LED in or something. (1" rings)

The vertical foregrip is a LaRue FUG. I'm not really sure what I want to do with it yet(grip/hand-stop)or even where I want it on the rail yet... Suggestions?

Though its not the most aesthetically pleasing thing ever, I'm really liking the FUG with the big flared base. I it feels really comfortable with that base/cap. (I'm sure there's a masturbation joke here somewhere...)



The UBR is pretty great for this kind of arrangement... on a heavy front end it's pretty much the only way to go, imho(unless you want a PRS). Also, it has some storage to cram some gun oil, batteries, weed, earplugs, condoms, whatever.

But as soon as my girlfriend saw this, she excitedly ran to the bathroom to see what else she could fill it with:



Apparently you can easily fit a bottle of machine gunners lube, and two O.B. tampons wrapped with a hair elastic(so they won't make noise, was her reasoning :bigHug: ). For tactical nosebleeds, of course...



After a great deal of trial and error, we found out that you CAN fit two O.B.s, a small bottle of lip-gloss, and a tiny tiny vibe. Clearly ladies and gentlemen, the UBR is an excellent choice for the tactical girl on the go. But we're wayyy off-topic here...

Interesting setup. I am building something similar with more magnification and an 18 instead of a 16. Was wondering- do you think you need the vert grip if you have a bipod attached doesnt one sort of negate the use of the other to an extent?

How does it shoot btw? The style is nice, but does it work well? Nice collection of parts you got there.
 
You know, people might laugh, but a tampon is a great part of any survival/first aid kit for just what you've mentioned - nosebleeds. Or, maybe, a sucking chest wound.

Nothing like a Tampax Mini for a nosebleed though, all joking aside.

Other than that, awesome rig - glad "some guy" (aka KevinB, who's probably the most well-versed tacticool badass - and who wasn't just playing around when he got that experience - we have on this board, IMO) inspired you to do "some thing" with your own rig!

God freaking damn it guy.... that gun is SOOO hot. I'm trying to steer away from ARs because I really want to build one, and I absolutely cannot afford it at this time. Your photos have me looking for a mexican to pawn off a kidney GDI. My health is at risk here man, no more, i can't take it!!
 
Okay man, I'm now too knowledgeable about ARs but I have a few Q's about your rifle.

First, why Noveske for the receiver? I don't know anything about them, just trying to understand why you went the way you did. What did the upper look like before you attached this awesome laRue free float rail. Did you choose your barrel specifically /w low profile gas block knowing that you were going to add a free float rail like this, or did the upper have a barrel and front sight base that you changed after you bought it? What you did is exactly what I would want to do but I don't see too many stock uppers that come equipped with a free float config like this.

I like the stock, looks really nice, what are you using there?

The whole gun looks like it has a high quality parkerized finish on it or something, looks sweet. Oh, lastly, I know everyone raves about the pmags, it looks perfect in your gun here, but I don't really know why everyone loves them so much. I mean to me a mag is a very simple device, i'm struggling to understand how these pmags can be SO much better as they are billed out to be.

It's not about PMAGS looking sweet, it's about them working better and more reliably than USGI mags, and being cheaper. Use both and come to your own conclusions. A magazine isn't just a simple device in a semi-auto. You don't want to be constantly dealing with FTFs.

PS: Nice recce. BTW, how much does the UBR weigh? That's the CHF barrel right?

Normally it's just the vertical grip(as shown in the first two pics). I have the bipod available mainly for people who can't shoulder the rifle(I've already had two people handling it that were unable to lift/hold it standing). That's why it's in the QD mount(easier to add/remove). I'll also use it for sighting, etc., but this time it was just on there for the sake of taking some more pictures.

Thanks. If I may expand on that: I try to avoid acting like some kind of internet commando and copying someone out of some wierd internet worship. I like function, but (politics aside) I guess I look at guns a lot like my dad looks at cars; I like the lines, the finishes, the mechanics. When I saw that rifle, there was something about the proportions that caught my eye. I liked the general arrangement of a 16" low-pro.

When I started this in 2008, it was originally going to put all this crap on a Sabre Defense, as it was during the start of the panic and nothing else was available in a high-end midlength. But after over a year and 4 delays from Sabre, I gave up. It so happened at this time that Noveske finally had N4 Recce(s) back in stock so I jumped and got one. As for who they are I guess you could say they are one of the top 3 "designer" brands. Think GUCCI.

Click this link. <- That is what it was when I got it. They have other models with low-profile setups, but I don't like their rails and I really don't like the Vltor MUR upper reciever those models come with. Just preference. What I did involves a couple more tools, though.

The anodizing on Noveske and LaRue products reflect their price. It's a similar feel to the finish on Italian Berettas(never handled the US made ones). Very smooth.

If you're struggling to understand, there's lots out there to read on the subject. As FPembleton said, they're more reliable/superior in function, cheaper, tougher, and stronger. They are superior to previous designs in literally every way(unless you want to argue incompatibility with some magwell designs). It helps that they look cool.

Hey thanks for turning me onto these Noveske rifles man, some of this stuff looks great!! Did you say you had to jump some hoops to special import this stuff? Is this hard to get in Canada?
