Is it legal to shoot a skunk with my pellet gun?

I can put together a 450gr .459" 45-70 bullet @ 300fps that is so quite when you fire it that the hammer hitting is louder than the shot...

That should take care of any skunk... :p

If it's a PAL rated 22cal air rifle I would go for a head shot and it should be like turning off a switch. As far as the legalities, leave that up to your conscience.

Peppy La Peu....

Are you brave enough to shoot a skunk with a pellet gun?

X's2 maybe three even.
Skunks in the hood are nasty especially if you have a dog or a cat that goes outdoors.
Right now I would hazard a guess that it is breeding season and the skunks are out and about feeding and/or searching for nesting materials.
Call your local City Office and see what they say about getting rid of this smelly critter for you.
I wouldn,t mention anything about the pellet gun or killing it in any way.
Anyway you look at it it is going to be messy and smelly.....

Please have someone video this performance :D
Reminds me of the CGN member that swatted a garbage bag thinking a racoon was inside:D

I know your not in Mississauga, but here is a link to the Animal Services website on how to deal with skunks

http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/re...0159&returnUrl=/portal/residents/citywildlife

note this portion of the article -

LIVE TRAPPING
We do not advocate live trapping wildlife. Trapping is a "band-aid" solution it does not solve the problem. To prevent a re-occurrence you must make the necessary alterations or repairs to your property or home. In discriminant trapping leaves orphaned young to starve, disease to spread and studies have shown that relocated animals do not survive. In accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Regulations, trapped animals must be released within close proximity of their capture point. The only way to effectively reduce the skunk population is to reduce their den sites and food sources. So help be part of the Solution!

and in Mississauga there is a By-Law that prohibits the discharge of a pellet gun, so you can't shoot him either.........

Then again it's up to you to know the regulations of your area.....and follow them or not...:D

Question to all - do you know how to grab a skunk and in the process he will not or cannot spray ?

Live-trapping? It's said that if a skunk can't raise its tail (as in a box trap), it cannot spray. The only problem is where to release. How far are you from city hall?

We do a fair amount of skunk control around here, and I can tell you from experience, that shooting skunks should always be the last resort (in developed areas) as they WILL release some spray. Pellet guns, even the higher powered .22 PAL rifles are very often ineffective at killing skunks at all but point blank range (and with hunting pellets), but low power BB guns from a distance can be great deterrent and conditioning tools. Skunks won't spray a nuisance unless they can identify a target in range, but they will trot along nicely to avoid the pain.

Trapping is easier and far more effective. Proper skunk live traps are designed to limit the animals mobility and hold the tail down, which "should" prevent spraying. Once you have successfully trapped an animal, cover the trap with a blanket, and relocate to your desired release/kill spot. This is the safest and 99% cleanest method.

Removing attractants and controlling den sites are still the best ways to deal with skunks but if you really want to kill off the population, look up the last thread on the topic and there are some great ideas, but be prepared as it is a very hot topic even around here.

Hey. I live in a residential neighborhood and I have a skunk that's tearing up my grass. I have a small games licence. Can I legaly kill it with one of my pellet guns?

Haha I was just thinking the same thing this morning after one of the little bastards tore up my garbage. Just move to the city outskirts and now realize I can't leave garbage outside anymore. Wife opened the back down to see one 2 feet away from her clawing through our garbage on the deck.

If you live in a residential area, either trap it yourself or have animal control trap it for you.
I have heard many people submerge the trap and drown the skunk, which I feel is cruel.
With all the research I have done, it sounds like carbon monoxide is the easiest and most humane way to go. put a hose between the opening in the trap and your tail pipe and idle for 10 minutes.
Someone correct me if I am out to lunch on this.

Close....

they say

if you grab a skunk by the tail and lift straight up, so as they cannot push against anything like the ground, they cannot spray....

.

My buddies who work in Animal Services use this method, especially when they have to get one that is stuck in a window well, so far it has worked for them all......

I wouldn't try it it either....LOL

I would go for a head shot and it should be like turning off a switch.

Don't be so sure about that lol...I shot one just as fair and square in the forehead last fall and although it didn't let out a blast of spray, it still sprayed....don't get too close.

Best way to get rid of a skunk... live trap small enough that it can't lift it's tail to spray... once ya catch it, just take the trap and drop it in a pond...bucket of water...anything lol. End of skunk problem, with no stink.

use "Fly Bait" it will kill anything that eats it.
Mix it with a little peanut butter and remove dead skunk next day.
FYI do not put down the hole or you will have a dead skunk.
leave in a an open area and whatever eats it will make it about 2-3 ft max..
Good luck
