1911s in LA!

LAPD's new Chief, Charlie Beck, has just approved the 1911 pistol for duty-carry by LAPD Officers!

Approved brands are Colt, Kimber, and Springfield Armory.

No word on ammunition yet, nor is there any word on which specific models are on the Approved List.

The Academy has already put together an Orientation Course and is running the first groups of officers through.

No guesses yet with regard to the exact percentage of officers who will exercise this new option, although I suspect it will be a minority, at least in the short-term.

This represents a bold move for any big-city PD!

good news for 1911 pistols to be again in the front line with the LEO ...
of course I'll go for the KImber (SWAT has it already as side arm)

Actually, both SWAT (Custom II) and the SIS unit (SIS model) have it as their sidearm.

I own a Kimber SIS, and it's outstanding. Once I broke it in, that is... what a pig for the first 500 rounds - pissed me right off. After I lapped the bushing in via firing the hell out of it, and took a wee bit of a stoning to the extractor, it's now a dream.

SWAT cannot be PARA-lized when they need a reliable gun to function...LOL

read this about SWAT side arm Kimber Custom II

LAPD has a long history with the 1911, so not entirely surprising.

They have allowed privately purchased .45 autos to be carried on duty for a long time first with the S&W double action semi autos, then more recently when Chief Bill Bratton allowed Glocks to be carried, the Glock 21 was very popular. These are all privately purchased by officers which is a concept rarely ever if ever seen in Canadian policing circles.

BTW, Winnipeg Police Emergency Response Unit (SWAT like) carried .45 Colt 1911's from the mid 1970's until the adoption of the Glock 22 .40 in the mid 90's.

I don't think I would carry a single stack if I were an LEO.....

+1

And I wouldn't carry a 1911 either. I'd carry a Glock 22 .40 cal.

Yes, you heard that correctly.

But the great thing here is that the officers now have a choice to carry whatever suits them best. I'm a big fan of that.

I'm +1 on that, too.

My choice above is what I would carry.

NAA.

Good for the LAPD officers.

The Texas Rangers official sidearm is the Sig P226 but they have the choice to carry any pistol they want. Lots of Rangers still carry Colts or other 1911's. Some old Rangers were still carrying single action sixguns up to the 1960's. I heard the Rangers museum in Waco, Texas is worth the detour if you're in Texas. Lots of nice firearms on display.

Agreed - if a .40 double-stack is what you shoot best with, are most comfortable with, and which leaves you the greatest probability of surviving a gun battle, then Officer - carry that thing!

If another officer feels the same way about a single-stack 1911 in .45 ACP, then he should carry that model instead.

The freedom to choose one's sidearm means nothing but good things for Officer safety - because a standard gun you DON'T like/shoot as well as an optional gun that you DO is no compromise in my mind.

We agree 100% here I'd say, NAA. :)

if I have to carry all day, my choice goes to HK 45 double stack... at least with a plastic HK pistol I can ####/safety the hammer.
second choice will be a 1911 Commander light weight single stack also in 45...

yeah, but they have their sig in .357 sig, best of both worlds.

I'm happy with 1911 for duty carry, but probably wouldn't be my first choice. I don't care what they carry long as they practice and qualify with it.
