Light barrel vs heavy barrel???

If all you are only going to shoot from a bench or bipod go heavy/long.
But a sporter .223 will have the same barrel contour as a .308 or .270 and will only have a .22" hole , it will be stiff enough to give good accuracy. And a whole lot nicer to carry.

is it beneficial to have a long barrel on a 223? say...26". how does the velocity compare to a 22" barrel?

You might lose 30-40fps per inch. Probably less though. The rifle will probably be more accurate with the shorter barrel.

Heavy Barrel

Depends if you are doing any offhand shooting. I find that a heavier gun, such as my 10 pound original Winchester Model 1876, really slows down any movement of the front sight, making it a whole lot easier to shoot accurately offhand. As for heat absorption, it depends if the barrel expands uniformly or not.

I have a CZ527 with the standard barrel. I just take several guns with me to the range and use them for coolers. Always a 22lr in there maybe 3. FYI my CZ527 is the Minimauser action actually designied for 223 and other short case cartridges. Check the specs on the CZ site but my CZ452 American 22lr is the same weigh to the ounce as the CZ527 223. Feels and handles like a rimfire. THAT is the rifle I want to pack around on a long day of gopher hunting. The 6-16 Nikon sitting on it really works with it.

This is a very interesting looking rifle. Could you post a little more info and possibly a range report? I might be interested in building something like your rifle.
