Barrel/NEA handguard alignment issue

I just took my 858 to the range for the first time with the new scope. Picked up a Bushnell Trophy 225 pistol scope which is perfect for placing on the front handguard. After 5 minutes came to the conclusion that I could not sight it in as the entire scope is pointing to far to the left. Took the scope off and blasted away at some targets with the iron sights.

The issue came up that my new NEA handguard is not in alignment with the barrel. When I first put the scope on the rifle and looking at 150m target I was 2 feet to the left on the scope as compared to the sites. On my 858 the front sight center post is all the way to the right. When I look straight down the new handguard (I drew a soap stone line down the center of the guard) it is pointing to the left of the barrel.

Now that I am at home I put the scope back on and adjusted the windage all the way to the one side. It might now be close to lined up, hard to tell with only 30' distance in the house. I will have to go back to the range to see. So my question is, is there a way to adjust the new NEA handguard/rail (I think not)? I was thinking about filing the front scope ring on the left side and the rear scope ring on the right side where they connect to the rail to try and bring the alignment closer to that of the barrel. Second thought is that I have a mig welder and may cut the scope rings apart and reweld them with an offset angle. By the way, my scope rings have ovals through them to allow for use of the iron sights.

Have any of you gentlemen/ladies run into this problem? Any thoughts on the best way to correct it?
 
There's no way for the NEA rail to not line up with the bore unless the gas block or rear sight base are off kilter somehow.

Is the rail really "pointing to the left of the barrel" or is the front sight just out of whack?

Unless its a gen 3 i agree. There are over 300 gen 4 sets out in circulation now, after next week there will be 1400. They are machined on a 5 axis machine with a rotary table, the mounting points are done on the first clamping so its impossible to have variation. when the parts are done a sampling is sent to the CMM for a 100% inspection. We would have picked up an alignment issue.
 
What kind of rings are you using?

I agree, it has to be an issue with the gas block out of vertical or maybe the rings. If the rings are cheap (re: Chinese) there may be a problem there. Try and switching the position of the rings and see if that throws alignment to the other side.. If they're an adjustable set like Angle-loc's or others they may be out. I'd also try another optic to rule out any problems with that.

An alternate option would be to run a string from your rear sight to your front sight post and see what is where. If you find that the front end is out of center, you can use the above mentioned rings to bring you back to center.
 
Just got off the phone with Travel240Z, the problem is his gas block is pinned on an angle and not vertical to the sight block.

Its just a simple matter of having a gunsmith redrill and pin the mounting hole.
 
After a couple of emails and a phone call with Charles Martel I think we have sorted out the problem. The gas block (and the front sight mount) are rotated counterclockwise. Therefore the rail is pointing to the left and also why my front sight post is all the way to the right.

We had calipered the handguard and it is all within tolerances and is not causing the issue as it fits the gun very well.

Thanks Charles Martel for your time, and all the insight on some of the things I could try (handguard mods/shims, scope ring mods, ect.) if I did not want to turn the gas block. As discussed probably the best permanent fix would be to have the gas block and front sight mount aligned by a gun smith and re-pinned.

NeitArms it took me about 15 photos before I got the string idea! I did not know about the Angle-loc's that sounds like a good idea.

I will post back after my next range trip to let you know if I could correct this with the windage alone. Thanks again guys for the help!
 
That's great customer service, a personal call is awesome.

Im enjoying the design and customer service side of the business as much as i enjoy being out shooting. I can say for the first time in my life, i wake up in the morning excited to go to work............ which some days involves me sitting at my home office desk wearing nothing but under wear and a smile............... :D Its the enjoyment of the job that drives new product development, and in two weeks we will be releasing 3 new products on top of the two that were unveiled and shipped last week.
