Alright, just paid for my first handgun today, (a glock 17 with trijicon night sights) I can pick it next week or so once everything has been finalized.
I honestly cannot wait to fire off some rounds with this baby.

+1

Congratulations. I should get a Glock someday:redface:.

Get it now while the price are damn good, I have delay to buy my G17 for six year because I hated how it look and how it handle. I still don't like how it look and how it handle, but they just have something that made you happy to own one. Shoot nice too.

The G17 along with a M9 and CZ

Thats a nice M9 you got there Trigun.

@OP, congratz man be safe! If you take anyone to the range give them the safety rundown and make sure they are going to control the muzzle. If you don't have a lot of experience shooting handguns maybe google "Todd Jarrett" and try to pick up some tips which can help you improve your accuracy right from the get go.

Upon reading the thread's title, I thought 'probably a G17'! Why, you ask? That was my first handgun as well, and it seems to be very popular amongst us pistol noobs! Nice buy! I hope you have as much fun with your new Glock as I did(and still do).

Yes very true, the reason why Glock, CZ and Beretta always a better choice for the first handgun because they are very very reliable and has least lemon rate, you don't want to screw up your first handgun purchase by buying a pistol that gives you nothing but fluctuation.

First handgun a 9mm?

Choosing a 9mm handgun to enter the pistol game is analogous to trying to teach a grade one student the intricacies of calculus. Who ever advised you, may have been well-meaning, but ignorant nonetheless.

Would you put a novice driver into a Ferrari or a Lamborghini? I would not.
Good luck and I hope you have some positive experiences with your 9mm in spite of being overpowered. Basic pistol shooting skills are best acquired by learning the skills with an air-pistol or a revolver in .22 cal. and having a competent coach at your side.

Tex, he said it was his first.....not his last.

OK. I'm sure you learned to crawl before you learned to walk. Just trying to be helpful. I once had a student (in my Math class),who asked my advice as to which handgun he should buy. Buy a revolver in .22 cal., I advised him. He bought a 9mm, b/c he thought it was more macho. I have several 9mm's, besides other more potent semi-autos, and enjoy them a lot. I also have taught handgun shooting to many people, young and old. Those who progressed, are usually the ones who are willing to take the advise of more experienced shooters, but if your ego demands that you start out with a center fire semi-auto, so be it. Above all: Be Safe!

Well I didn't choose the 9mm because I thought it made me 'macho' or that my ego demanded it. I wanted something that I could 'grow into.' A .22 cal revolver would have been a a great choice for me as well, I just figured that down the road I would probably want something with a bit more 'punch,' and seeing as money doeesn't grow on trees for me and getting both isn't an option, I decided to get something that would satisfy me longer than a .22 cal pistol. (better bang for the buck)
But thanks for your concern, but judging by some of the other posts I've read the glock 17 seems to be a good choice for handgun beginners.

And thanks to everyone else that congratulated me, I probably won't post pics, seeing as everyone already knows what a glock looks like :)

I understand what you are saying... it's just that he's already bought the Glock, so suggesting that he got ignorant advice and made a huge mistake doesnt help buddy much.
Now suggesting that he buy an Advantage Arms .22lr upper for his Glock so he can practice with less recoil and cost would be another thing...

congrats

i still get the giddy feeling, and polish and handle my new guns.... even after 20 or so...

infact, I just bought a 460v and will take possession wednesday. I am so excited. lol I just keep looking at pictures.

OP, the feeling never goes away :)

PS. a 9mm is fine for first pistol....

Excellent choice!

I love Glocks for plinking and playing. I have currently have
three (17,19,23) and just picked up a fourth.... another 17. lol

Ammo is somewhat cheap, and it's a good starting point.

Yes especially when you are used to shooting 308 at nearly a buck a round. I have shot a few different 9mm and they were never hard to shoot, or difficult to shoot accurately I should say. I would pick a .22 just for the extreme cost efficiency, but it is hard to have as much fun with the lower calibre rounds...
