SKS Question - Shoot Bayonet Extended or Not?

I know that my subject has been discussed in this forum in many posts.

Has anyone done a comparison of the accuracy from a rifle, all other variables being the same, with the bayonet extended as opposed to being closed?

I have several SKS rifles. The mass/harmonic relationship of the barrel and bayonet makes very little difference on either SKS rifles that I own. Some of the North American rifles I have are extremely sensitive to any mass or changes that effect the free-floating barrel, however, the SKS makes no noticeable difference at all.

The mass of the bayonet would be the same in my opinion, whether in or out. The only thing that seems to affect an SKS is running out of ammo.

Stick the bayonet in the ground and use it as a bipod.
;)

Tried it, does NOT work for me. At 100 yds standing, I can shoot a 3 - 4" group with my sks, usually with 1 flier opening it up to 6" or so. Bench, with a rest under the stock I can bring those groups down to about 2", still usually get a flier or 2. Bench, using the bayo as a bi-pod I missed the paper 4 out of 5 times, not just a large group but flat out missed to paper. At first I was baffled until I realized the bayo is fixed to the very tip of the barrel and it must throw off the harmonics or something.

Just got back from shooting my SKS and SR9 for the first time. Both very impressive weapons.

With the SKS, I set 2 targets and put 60 rounds through each at 100 yards, one target no bayo, one target with bayo. Couldn't see a difference. If anything, the bayo might have been a little better, adding stability in the crosswind.

This is an interesting topic. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this with a scope on their SKS? Point being that my best groups with irons is usually twice what it is with a scope. Ex. 4inch groups at 100 /irons, 2 inch groups at 100 /optics.

Shooting with irons isn't what I would call scientific, where as a scope and a decent 3 point shooting rest is. My findings with bayo on or off makes no difference to speak of, even though I was watching for it.

I fully agree. But I only have a Tech 200 peep on my 1951 Tula whereas my newly acquired 1953 shall remain "as issued."

Both of my Russkie SKS's shoot very accurately without the bayonet extended. On the other hand, my Tula 91/30 Mosin Nagant ex sniper shoots way high and to the right without the "pigsticker" attached. With it on the rifle, I can hit the 200 meter gong with no problem. (I love seeing everyone's reaction when I do that!!!)
