Shopping for an inexpensive scope. Need Opinions.

Price range around 60$. I am thinking an older fixed power japanese tasco. Fewer bells and whistles, less expensive for more scope and less things that can go wrong with it.

The scope is only going to be used at the range and the range is only 300 Yards, it is to be used on a 223.

Please do not suggest anything more expensive. I have a pretty good grasp on the selection of scopes from 200-2000. I just do not know what is available in this lower price range used that will have decent mechanicals, hold zero, and optically usable.
 
If you can find Japanese Tasco those pretty good compared to the newer Chinese ones. My dad has an old Japanese Tasco on his hunting rifle...its clear and holds zero. The newer ones are Pieces of ####.

Personally cheap scopes piss me off and are a big waste of time but I know where you are coming from so keep your eyes open and try to stay away from the chinese trash.

Save up for a Bushnell banner, should be in the 100.00 range. FS
 
Bushnell Scopechief VI fixed 4X is often available at gun shows for $ 50 - $ 100.

The Scopechief VI is one of the toughest, brightest scopes of the older scopes.
 
I have a Weaver 3-9 (can't remember model number) that has a damaged seal. For fair weather it would be fine. I'll give it to you for the price of shipping.
 
I have several old made-in-U.S.A., steel Weavers, K4, K4-1, K2.5, Challenger 4x. All cost around $60 used, all work well. If you find one like that, try it. I expect will be as good or perhaps better than a fixed power made-in-Japan Tasco. But I think there is a Japanese 6x WA Tasco in the EE right now.

Up your budget a bit and you might be able to get one of the new Redfield's (?)

They have the Leupold warranty I believe- which is good.
 
Lots of good suggestions here already... the older Bushnell Banners, Scopechief, Japanese made Tasco, used Bushnell Legend, and I'll add an older Redfield. They were at one time considered to be premier scopes, pretty much up there with Leupold. I had an older straight 4x "widefield" with the TV screen shaped objective that took a fair beating for many years without incident, until it was replaced.

I figured I'd try the toughest test I could think of with the NCStar scopes. I installed one on a 300 WIn. Mag. About 400 rounds later, it still operates beautifully, so I got one for my 308, same thing. From what I hear, if you do have problems, their service is second to none. I know I wouldn't hesitate to use them again, as a matter of fact I've got a 3X9 on order for a .22 I've got. It would seem that if you do get a lemon, you'll know right away. Either they are junk or they're great. As mentioned, I've used 2, some friends of mine also have them, and no one has had any trouble yet.

I know that many of the people who are very quick to say they're junk have never used them.
 
I have an older Bushnell Sharpshooter 3-9x32 on my .338WM. No problems at all.
I just ordered a Konus (Konushot) 4x32 for US$22.70 from eSuperstores. I'll try it on my muzzle loader. If it doesn't hold "0" (I'd be surprised..) I can still use it on one of my .22-s.
BTW, it's my second Konus. My first one is a KonusPro 3-10x44IR (illuminated) that I bought on eBay recently. Still in box, but it has nice clear optics and I like the way they designed the cross hair illumination. I paid $100 for it (shipped).

Depends on what you actually plan on and, expect!

I just bought an NCstar. It was under 50$'s...illuminated mil-dot recticle, 3-9x32. 1 inch tube. Came with weaver based rings and, an extra battery.

Expectations of this new toy were not high....surpassed 'em. Honestly, was kind of emabarassed putting a scope (most popular with the airsoft crowd) on anything...after I read they were "air gun recoil approved" thought it'd be ok.

Love it!!!! Seriously, extra cheap (less than the cost of high-end rings!) and, so far works like a charm! Also, does have a warranty (hope I'll never have to test it!!!)

In the same neighbourhood, I have a hawke as well (it was 60$'s) with a map8 recticle....very, very low priced. My exepctations were low enough that, I have nothing but great things to say about 'em!!

Flame-proof suit dawned!
