Questions about the handguard on the Remington 597 VTR

Hey everyone,

Question to anyone willing to answer.

I recently purchases the Remington 597 VTR with the collapsible stock + the solid handguard (no attachment rails on it)

I was looking at the Fab Sports website and came across the following handguard

I really dig the look of this bad boy and would love to swap out my stock handguard for this one. The only problem is that i have no idea how to do this. I consulted the manual that came with the firearm and it was of little help (as the manual is a generic manual that comes with the 597, but does not seem to be specific to the VTR) regarding how to remove the stock handguard

Can anyone help we with this problem/issue?

Hey Silver you'll need a strap wrench. Then it's pretty easy. I just bought a cheap one from Canadian Tire. Then just unscrew it. It's in there pretty good so it does take some torque but It can be done and is very straight forward.

just to clarify...

So the stock handguard is just literally screwed in place? There are no other screws/bolts that hold it in place?
Just get a strap wrench and twist that sucker off...

I am assuming that you have done this...
If so, what type of handguard did you replace the stock one with (just for interest sake)

Yep,
Just use a strap wrench to take off the handguard and a flat head screw driver to remove the rear screw and then a AR wrench to take off the rear castle nut. I should take you no more than 10 minutes to do.

Umm I don't remember there being a screw or a rear castle nut, not positive but I just don't recall there being one. As far as I recall you just twist off the old one and twist on the new one. The stock doesn't have a castle nut either on the fixd stock model you have to buy a castle nut if you change to adjustable. Your Mileage may Vary

I wondered about that as well. My stock is fixed- no castle nut. No castle nut on the fore end either.
 
When I had my VTR the front alum. handguard with the holes in it came off with little effort at all.
It did have two pieces of black heater hose over the barrel to dampen some sort of implied or felt recoil....
But, I dont have it anymore so can not take pics.
It do know that it came off with ease and went back on with ease though, hand tight is all.

Steps and tools

Here is what I used to remove and replace the free float tube on the 597 VTR. The hardest part was getting the barrel nut off with that stupid heater hose wedged in there against the barrel. As has been mentioned in this thread the ff tube and the barrel nut are not hard to take off if you have the right tools.

Reverse process to install new ff tube, By the way, I got this one from Questar for a quarter of the price of the one you are looking at. Will all that more money make your gun shoot better- I don't know.

Question for Satain or Anfoman 76: Do you have to replace the heater hose on the new ff tube because if you do it's going to take forever to get that sucker back down to the base of the barrel. Anyone know if you have to?

And yes, I will be putting a riser on the scope base. It does actually clear it but not by much. This was more to show what needed to be done to remove/replace the ff tube.

I found some other one of the Fab Sports website that are a lot less expensive as well (around the $120-150 mark) that will also fit.

Another question for you...

Can that last remaining piece of the stock hanguard be removed (behind the new handguard)?

Or

Does that not come off?
