how much is enough for you?

Last trip out I had three magazines (each with 4 rounds) and a buttstock shell holder that had another 11 rds. I also had an ammo wallet with another 10rds. I also keep a spare box in the backpack. More ammo in the truck but I have never had to crack into it.

box of 20 in the truck. load rifle(4 rds) leave 6 in truck, bring stripper of 10 in pocket. total carried 14. It's very rare that I have fired more than one shot at a deer, but when you need to, you really do need to!
I know guys who will carry 2 or 3 rounds in total. I feel that's irresponsible, I like to have too many rather than too few.
Watch " deliverance" and then decide how many to bring!

My grandpa only carries 3 or 4. He wont shoot if its a bad shot. Ive never seen him take more then 2 shots an anything (including a kill shot if its laying their).

Usually I'll carry the rifle full, plus enough to reload twice. On most of my rifles that's 4 in the gun and 8 in two different pants pockets. I've done it long enough that it feels like a good luck ritual already. Back at the truck there will be whatever is left from from a 50 box of handloads, but never less than about 25 total.

I keep a 50 round box of ammo at the cabin, but when I'm actually out I have the magazine full and two ammo wallets in my pockets (I loose fewer rounds that way) for a total of 20. If I bring along any small game loads for the rifle, that is in addition to my regular ammo.

I'll bring 2 boxes to camp, leave to hunt with what will fit in the rifle and the balance of one box in a small pouch. Too much for one - but with a 30-06 you just might end up being someone's savior.

Wow, I guess I am an ammo horder! I've always believed that it is better to "have it and not need it" than "need it and not have it" I've never fired more then 2 shots at one animal. Last year I fired a total of two shots and brought home two deer. So it's not like I'm blasting away hoping one of my rounds hits.
It's enlightining to read some of your comments... equal parts superstition, repetition, and practice! I thought I was one of the few people who have lucky numbers or this pocket ,that pocket beliefs!
regards, Hitch

Boomer,
I'll use an ammo pouch when I have to keep ammo types separate, softs and solids being the situation that comes to mind. Speaking of which, I've got a fistful of Banded Solids, A-Frames and a new continent to try on Saturday.:D

14 for a mag and 16 for a standard cartridge, enough to load the rifle and 10 in a belt pouch, don't need that many but other opportunities such as coyotes or a wolf might arise and don't want to be limited due to ammo.

You lucky Dog, are you back to Africa again, or is this a side trip elsewhere?

Three in the rifle, and three extras. For my .300. I don't think I have ever used more then that in a day of hunting Big Game. Now, going out and shooting Gophers, no less then 1000 rouinds of .22 and generally about 200 of .17hmr

For Big Game I fill my rifle or shotgun and take two full reloads (normally 9-12 shells total)
For Waterfowl I normally take two boxes, plus a few odds and ends to shoot cripples with. I always have multitudes of miscellaneous ammo in cubby holes and glovebox of my truck.
