I'm thinking about buying this shotgun but I can't find many informations on it for some reason.

Ithaca website says it can shoot 2" 3/4 AND 3" but some guy in a youtube review says 2" 3/4 only and someone else selling one here is also saying 2" 3/4 only. Is the website wrong or something?

Also, there is no info about the choke anywhere? Can I shoot steel and slugs with it?

The new Ithaca M37 defenders can shoot 3" shells. The older Ithaca M37s are 2 3/4" only.

The defenders have no choke, they are cylinder bore. You can shoot slugs, steel or whatever out of it. As long as it is a 2 3/4" or 3" 12ga shell.

Talk to Clay at Prophet River. He can get you a nice new one!

Hey thanks for the reply!
appreciated!

If you buy one of the new Defense model Ithacas, get the one with the etxtended magazine tube. The standard length magazine tube is not supported by the barrel.

My guess is that the Stevens-branded M37 copies are Chinese made.

The stevens is available w/ a 18.25 barrel, bear, rifle or ghost ring sights. Rumor is they are made in china and are similar to the norinco model (if not the same). Personally, I'd stick to the real thing.

What kind of impact does it have on the shotgun? I'm a newbie...

Most repeating shotguns have a lug on the barrel so that the barrel attaches to both the receiver and the end of the magazine tube. For some reason, Ithaca has chosen to use a fixed, free-floating barrel on the 4+1 shot Defense model that is attached only to the receiver.

The disadvantage of this arrangement is that it provides no support for the magazine tube, thus making it more prone to bending. Besides that, it is also less convenient for cleaning.

Yes, I meant a vintage Ithaca. Though the new ones are supposed to be well made (If you can get over the unsupported barrel thing).

The only reason I am leery of the Stevens is the rather poor reputation of the Norinco M37 clones and the fact that I haven't been able to find much about them.

If the Stevens turns out to be a decent product I'd buy one for sure. I just don't want to be a guinea pig.

Ok thanks
That's good to know.

I shouldered a Stevens/Ithica/ Re-Branded Norinco with rifle sights today, the pictures I have seen on the internet seem to exagerate pitch. The gentleman who served me said as far as he knew the Stevens was just a rebranded Norinco, not sure how that works in the states.

Sporting guns made in China are OK to import into the states AFAIK.

How did the gun look/feel?

Hopefully you have a source secured to buy the item you want , I put out a 'WTB' ad for a ' lapd ithaca 37 ' and got nothing but hill billys sending me pics of ' goose guns '

best of luck
