Hunting Groundhogs with Hungry today

.22 is not an ideal round for the job the odds are higher that the animal will be wounded, but I'm sure someone will come on here and justify the use of .22lr as groundhog medicine...

Try CCI Stingers or better yet the CCI quik-shok, they are the only bullet I will use for Raccoons. They have plenty of splatter power (head shot Raccoons = brain soup). I have tried almost every other commercially available 22 lr and I haven't found any that I like as much as the Quik-shok. Velocitors and Yellow Jackets aren't even close in my books.

Why though if you can use a .223 especially for longer distances? Also you can later use it for Coyote afterwards.

.22lr has been a gopher getter for years!! Shooting practice and shot placement is key. Try using CCI Stingers or Velociters. More money than other ammo, but they will do the job if you do your part.

I've shot hundreds upon hundreds of earthpigs with a .22, he is only going to get down the hole if you shoot him in the ass end, anywhere up front and he is dead. Hell I have shot them with a 22 250 and it got down its hole, its all about the shot placement. For someone to say a .22 is not sufficient they need to hit the range more often.

If you get a chance to get a box or two of CCI quik-shoks do it. If you like stingers you will love quick-shoks. The specifications are similar but the Q.S. are a fragmenting hollow point, so they really blow up.

I didn't want to do this, but all of you guys that think using .22lr need to see this.....

The Groundhogs are using 223's, how long do you think before they get their paws on 50bmg's??????

With Bear Calvary, Cat Snipers, and now Groundhog spec-ops were pretty much ####ed.

I agree man, longer range higher velocity rounds are more dangerous in a farm environment, with farms often within 5k in every direction, a .22 is a sure safe caliber to use! (shotguns are fun too :p)
Actually, the high velocity varmint bullets will desintegrate not richochete, but a 22LR will, so it is safer to use something like a .223, 22/250, or other such "varmint" cartridge in farm country.

I got 14 bean bears around Young's Longshot last year. Some had holes in the 900 and 1k berms. Unfortunately there isn't a single one to be seen around the farmhouse here in KW... coyotes are just too efficient I guess.

I'm waiting to be discovered by "Canadian Idle" (sic) LOL :D

Seriously, whenever we are hunting varmints, it's 'perma-smile' time!

On another note, DonnyFenn1, I'll be in Turner Valley at the end of July staying at a buddy's place. Have booked a Saturday for an M14 Clinic at The Shooting Edge, Sat the 24th, I mean. Will popping some gophers at that time! ;)

Nice pictures. We don't get that many of them around here. I've shot a couple with a 22 single shot when I was much younger and they died real easy. Much like rabbits.
