I'm currently looking to buy my first pistol and I'm hoping for some input to help me decide.

My top picks so far are:
- Ruger MK III standard $300 (used, but looks like great condition)
- S&W 22A-1 $374.95 (New)
- Buckmark camper $319.95 (New)
- S&W 422 $350 (Used, looks like good shape)

What would you choose between these guns? Is there anything else you would recommend in this price range?

Go with the Ruger. Mind you, a new 5.5", blued, Target model retails for $395.
If you do opt for the Ruger, don't even think about taking it apart. Getting 'em back together, properly, is a nightmare.

You can't go wrong with a Ruger.
However, after having four Rugers (all with bull barrel), I still prefer my Browning Buck Mark (Plus UDX SS model). Simply a personal choice.
Try them first, if you can.

Buckmark. Much easier to take apart and clean.

The Ruger isn't really that hard to strip and re-assemble. The first time is a bit of a challenge, but after that it is no big deal. It is a PITA to clean well, though. Fortunately, it doesn't need cleaning very often. I clean mine about every 1000 rounds or so, and it ticks along nicely in between those.

If one could read and see, then it shouldn't be a problem to take the Ruger into pieces and put back together. there are tons of informations and youtube video show you step by step to do it. I vote for Ruger.

I think people that have problems with striping and re-assembly just aren't reading and following directions properly.

It is not hard at all. The first time I did it I was worried because of all the "ooh ahh impossible" comments. Once finished I wondered what all the balley-hooing was all about.

If scared of mechanical things maybe guns aren't the thing for you....

OP- go with the Ruger! Lots of fun.

I would go with a S&W 617. A little more expensive, but a great way to learn and share your experience with the wife/gf/kids.

It's not hard to put the Ruger back together. I am a complete noob at this sort of stuff and never had a problem.

If you don't rush and follow the manual exactly it's quite easy. I've only taken my MK II apart twice and I still cannot do it without reading the instructions, but it's not hard to do.

Buy Ruger, you'll never regret! I owned a Ruger Mark II Target for 5 years and is still shooting great. Disassembly will be easy after several time. You can always buy after market part to improve trigger pull (I spent $28 dollars to buy a drop in sear and trigger pull down to 2.5lbs.) Browning Buck Mark has a terrible trigger pull, try it before you consider it.

Hmmm... I've owned 4 Rugers so far. No mods, all bone stock. Non of them came close to the factory trigger pull of my Buck Mark. Actually, that was one of the reasons why I sold the Rugers and kept the Browning.
Saying that, the changeable 1911 style grips on the new 22/45 will take me back to the Ruger club again. Well, after I get my GSG 1911.... :D
