OK, I've had the rifle for a month, and the weight sucks on the HBAR. I am only 45 minutes from ADCO firearms in Ohio, once I cross into detroit, so I am going to have my barrel fluted for weight savings. My questions are:

1) flash hider - what do they weigh? What happens if you shoot without one on the gun (since mine is pinned, it would be a PIA to remove it and try it). I could make an aluminum collar to cover and protect the threads. The weight savings would be substantial since the weight is so far forward. I notice that all of the hunting types like the remington do not have anything at all on the front. Since I don't have the folding stock overall length should not be an issue. How about titanium flash hiders? They seem pricey, but must be noticeably lighter...

2) flutes - I would like to have the front end of the barrel reduced in diameter to match the small step before the flash hider. That way the flutes could go close to the end of the barrel to maximize weight reduction. Does anyone know why the step is there? Does anyone in canada do the fluting?

3) 6.8 SPC - would this caliber be OK without the hider as well? I am looking for a used barrel, if I can find one. I was considering using the 6.8 with 90gr bullets for varmint, and the heavier bullets for deer, that way I would not have to bother with switching barrels, but the 6.8 ammo seems pretty pricey. Do any of you have the 6.8, how do you like it?

4) Are there any other areas anyone has found where weight could be reduced from the rifle?

You should be able to flute right past the step with no ill effect. Check out the official XCR forum, lots of guys fluting their barrels.

If your main concern is the forward weight you could put a MagPul PRS stock on the rifle. I did this and found that the balance moved back to just about the trigger; made it very nice for offhand shooting. Got the stock and AR adapter from Wolverine.

As for the flash hider, you just need to grind or file off the the little bit of weld on the underside of the flash hider, then but the barrel on a piece of wood and whack it with a rubber mallet. The little pin that the weld was holding in place will fall out and you can unscrew the flash hider. You can use the rifle without the flash hider, though covering the threads is a good idea to avoid damage to them.

I have no weight problems with the XCR, but lighter is always better. I would also be wanting to get my barrel fluted, even if it was just for dissipating heat a little better. Keep me posted on your progress!

I don't think there is any weld on mine, I thought I could see the pin clearly in the hole, I'll check tonight.

Contact Joe @ Dlask Arms h ttps://www.dlaskarms.com/ about fluting he will do an excellent job for you.

I am also thinking about getting my 223 barrel fluted and removing the flash hider there is a weld on mine, as well as buying a 6.8spc conversion kit because there isn't a 6mmX45/6mmspc/6mmAR available in the XCR's yet and I definitely want the flash hider off of my barrel as well.

From what I hear the 110gr Sierra Prohunters are the best all round bullet to buy for pricing/hunting followed closely by the Barnes 85gr TSX/brand new Barnes 95gr TTSX and Accubonds but these are double the cost of the Prohunters.

OK - I took my flash hider off. It was not pinned at all. seems it would save a few ounces at least.

On XCR forum, they weighed a fluted HBar and it was 3.5 oz heavier than the thin (pencil) barrel after fluting. I'm not sure the difference between factory stock pencil and HBAR.

Looks like I found a used 18.5" 6.8 SPC conversion kit in the US for $550 shipped. Gonna start with the flutes on that one...
