Should I hold out for a S&W model 41

You can often find a good used S&W Model 41 for not much more than a new Ruger.

I want to shop where you do. You can find a good used Ruger for around $325 in the EE. I have never seen a 41 go for less than around $600.

The ruger's have awful triggers.

I wouldn't say mine were awful, but they weren't fantastic, either. A new Volquartsen sear and hammer from Rimfire Sports makes a huge improvement in the Ruger trigger for $65USD and the hammer is optional. The sear makes most of the difference for only $25USD.

OP, if you have a burning desire for a 41, save up and get one. No matter how good another pistol is, it won't be the 41 and you will end up buying a 41 anyway if you like them. They are quality pieces and if nothing else, you can simply sell it again for no loss if it doesn't work out for you.

Buying a gun is not a rational action, it is an emotional one and you should get the one that moves you. Unless it is a pile of junk, and the 41 certainly isn't.

I've shot a couple of Buckmarks and found that they are nice to shoot and feel right in my hands. The URX with the shorter bull barrel feld especially nicely balanced.

I've also shot a couple of extra fancy target Hi Standards. One was set out for me complete with the display box and compensation weights. A bonified first class target gun that was clearly far, far more capable than I was worthy of. It fit my hands and shot superbly and I even did a better than normal group with it. Likely because I sweated over each shot. But it didn't magically make me a better shooter at normal effort levels so I went back to enjoying my other .22's quite happily.

But then my shooting with pistols is geared towards action shooting where speed and accuracy need to be balanced. The 41 is more about Olympic style shooting. If that's your game of choice then I'd also suggest holding out for what you want since you know what it's like. But if you are just a plinking sort of guy then one of the lower cost options would be just as good and in some ways better where the extra weight of the longer barrel and heavy construction out at the end would make it harder to swing from one target to the next and acquire each new sight picture quickly.

Just buy the 41, had two, one with iron sights the other with a scope, the scoped one was boring cause if you put the X there, the bullet went there! And,, I'm not that good, I'll stick with my run of the mill, BUT, if you want accuracy,, go S&W mod 41!! Beautiful, easy to shoot, easy to clean gun.

I don't know if it is just about Olympic style shooting. I used mine for years for .22 handgun silhouette. It was the gun for knocking down those rams at 100 m. While most guys don't shoot silhouette anymore, it's still pretty gratifying to hit a small gong at 100 m standing with no optics. It is the ultimate long range plinker as far as I am concerned. Or you can get some pretty impressive groups at shorter ranges as well. I say go for it. I just can't see it as a decision you would come to regret. At the very worst, you would have no trouble selling it if you thought it wasn't what you hoped for. They are worth more now than when new.

My comparison is between a new Ruger and a used Model 41. Right now, a Ruger Mk III with 5-1/2" bull barrel is listed on the Wholesale Sports website for $419.95 blued and $539.95 in stainless. Used S&W Model 41s usually go for around $600-$750. I don't think that is a huge price difference for something you plan on buying once that should last you decades.

hoy cow guys thanks for the opinions. I'm still torn as I'm pricing out and was going to start looking for a ruger 22/45 hunter with the 7"barrel however...I got my wife to read this with me as she is going to get some use out of this pistol as well and the one comment that was made by tjhaile " somthing you buy once that should last you decades" and she said yeah I agree with that...
I guess I will be doing some more thinking and looking as the 41 is still on the top of my list.

"...tried this "super pistol" with cheap..." Smith 41's are like that. Very particular about ammo it'll shoot well and cycle the action. And no two will like the same brand. The price of the ammo means nothing though. Mine won't shoot or cycle high priced ammo worth beans. It likes Remington Target and the old IVI Standard velocity.
Epp's is listing a used 7"(not allowed in ISS competition), 41 with a bit of rust, for $550. Only one mag.

I realize that, but if you are looking at used 41's, a look at used Ruger's seems fair. Even at that, $600 is still nearly 50% more than the blued Mk.III at $419.95, and $600 is low end for a 41. The 22/45's are cheaper than the Mk.III's as well, if he is interested in one of those instead. The new 22/45 with the removeable grip panels would be a decent choice if OP is looking at them.

S&W 41, all the way.

Mine 14 years over 25000 rounds, still looks brand new , like day one. and shoots better than me.

It depends on what you're looking for. Rugers are certainly a very good value for money, but the S&W is more refined. If it's a case of merely delaying your purchase a couple months, as indicated by the original poster, then I would go for the 41. Get whatever floats your boat and don't get too hung up on the purchase price.

I will admit that if it had to be a new gun, I would be pretty hesitant to cough up the asking price for a Model 41. There are quite a few used ones kicking around for much less than they cost new.

I'm afraid the more I think about this the more I think I should hold out for what I think I really want, However by next week there wil probobly be somthing else shiny and pretty I want. ( I have a tendancy to be like that).
If anybody knows of a model 41 with a 7" barrel for sale at a local gun shop or from a friend please keep me in mind. I realize there are some on the EE now but they are a little more than I'm willing to spend (I'm sure those ones may well be worth the extra $$) it's just a bit over what I'm able and willing to spend right now.
Thanks gents for your opinions and help

Some of the 41's work very well and those lucky people usually love them.......however, there are many used ones kicking around for a good reason, they are problematic.
Also over priced in my opinion. The best of the used .22 target type pistols is the Browning Medalist. You can get a real good clean one for 500-600 and they all work well.....in my experience.

A nice gun for sure...I would really look at High Standard though. The used 41s I have seen had issues and hence were sold.

Be sure to post a range report and pics for whatever you decide on.

Good luck!

I would wait for the S&W Model 41!!!!.. It is a far superior gun when compared the Ruger... I had both.. Ruger Mark III and a Smith and Wesson 41... The trigger is far superior... it is heavier.. for target shooting.. I even put in a Valqu.... trigger job on my Ruger and it did help but did not compare to the 41....

Too bad i just sold mine on EE for $675 plus shipping.. Would love a pristine one but they are more expensive...

Keep looking on EE or Armco.. they get them in occasionally.. thats where i bought mine..

There is a very nice 7" model 41 at High Profile Sports in Mackenzie B.C.If it was a 5.5",I would have bought it for myself.I have seen several pictures, and the bluing isn't even worn under the trigger guard like the other used 41s that I have looked at.I believe that they are asking $750.

Buy a used Ruger in the meantime, take your time to find a reasonably priced 41, buy it and resell the Ruger. 41's are pricey on the EE. Private sales from other gunclub members usually goes for $300-$500. Be patient.

Well thanks guys, my search is over. One of the members of CGN sent me a pm with an offer I couldn't refuse. I am now a proud owner of a S&W model 41 with 2 barrels. I am just waiting for the final paper work and the post office to deliver my new toy. My wife convinced me to quit stalling and get the damn thing (she 's looking forward to shooting it as well). I'm sure I'll shoot it with a huge grin and when my wife is shooting it I'll be looking in another gun book or catalogue for my next shinny toy.
I have, in the past, told my wife ...this will be the last gun I'll ever need. That was about 6 or 7 ago. Now she just roles her eyes.
I told the guys at work I just bought a handgun then proceded to thumb through the pages of some redneck #### (wholesale and cabelas cataloges) ...they rolled thier eyes as well. Some people just don't understand.:D

I originally wanted a Model 41,but there were none that I could find at the time,so I bought something else instead. Now I decided that I really want a Model 41,so I am having Clay from Prophet River import one for me.I was able to find new ones as low as $879 in the USA,so with our strong dollar, even with import fees, the price is still well below what a Canadian dealer would charge if he had one,and I could nor find a Canadian dealer with one in stock.
