So it started off doing it every once in a while and now it seems to happen all the time. On the last round it is not staying back at slide lock. Anybody else have this problem and what did you do to fix it???

Pistol is a Sig 9mm Elite...

So, you are saying that the slide isn't locking back on an empty chamber? Or am I reading you wrong?

If it is failing to lock back on an empty chamber during live fire, start with a function test. Make sure pistol is unloaded, insert empty magazine, rack slide back sharply. Is it staying open?

If no, you have some kind of mechanical problem with the pistol. Take it to a gunsmith to have it checked out. I am thinking maybe an improper reassembly of the slide-stop lever or spring.

If it stays locked back every time on the function check, as much as you might not want to hear this, it is something you are doing with your hands when shooting. The slide-stop lever on a SIG is further back and easier to inadvertently hold down than on just about any pistol. Watch, or have a friend watch, to see if your hands are touching the slide-stop lever during live fire - particularly your strong-hand thumb if you are right handed.

Train your self to learn a grip for shooting SIG that doesn't hold the lever down, i.e. lock your strong-hand thumb onto the first joint on your weak-hand thumb. I have been shooting SIGs for years and occasionally I still do it. It can be frustrating.

If it is not a mechanical problem, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Try shooting one handed with a grip where your thumb is below the slide lock/release. If locks back reliably, it's your two handed grip that's the problem and not the gun.

Try disassembling your magazines and give them a thorough cleaning.

My P226 failed to lock slide open on last shot a couple of times when it was brand new. After taking apart the mags, cleaning off the factory grease, and oiling them, it has never failed from then on.

Basically to ensure the magazine follower engages the slide stop, the spring has to push up fast/hard enough to catch the slide before it closes. So another possibility is that your magazine spring may be weak.

And as was already mentioned, reloaded ammunition that's loaded light will often never lock slide open; simply because slide doesn't recoil back far enough for slide stop to engage notch.

Can be a few things:

-Like the other stated, bad grip (riding the slide lock lever)
-Weak mag spring
-Slide lose too much velocity because of grease (If you use heavy grease on the slide)
-Recoil spring too stiff
-Ammunition load too light

Common problem shooting SIGs is you thumb just barly touching the slide lock, or limp wristing. If you have been shooting a 1911, it usually seems to be part of the transition to a SIG.

How long have you been shooting this pistol?

Don't start clipping coils off the spring.

I have this exact same problem. 115 grain FMJ's are not powerful enough to drive the slide all the way back to correctly lock on the last round.

I have a positive slide lock on every magazine with hot ammunition..

I have put thousands of rounds of 115g FMJ through my Sig 226 without a single issue. I use a combination of Sig and Mecgar mags, and have not experienced a failure with either.

x 2 here

"I have put thousands of rounds of 115g FMJ through my Sig 226 without a single issue"

also try this advise before anything !!!

"Diagnose if your grip is the problem first before picking and poking stuff on the gun"

I had this problem whit my HK P2000 when I switch from my p226R in .40

2 thing were causing it, ammo not hot enough (cheap Remington 115 gr) and limp wristing :( ......

I fixed the limp wrist and it's done

So I suggest you try shooting whit only 1 round in the mag whit a really stiff wrist and take a look at what happen.

don't chop spring if you are not a qualified armorer don't cut any thing!

I forgot to mention that I use high end moly based grease(mobil/exxon) on my sig, which does slow the return of the slide a bit. With the Winchester white box 115grain FMJs they cycle and feed everytime but rarely lock the slide. With 124grain JHP P+, no issue.

My sig would likely fall under the excessively lubricated catagory...

I use slide glide medium grease on the slide and 124gr TMJ ammunition with no issues..

+1 on the slide glide it works great. I have also used TW 25 with good results.
As advised above do NOT cut coils off your recoil spring that's a great way to damage your pistol.
You might also want to check Sigforum as there is a stickied discussion there about the slide failing to lock back. There's more info there than you can imagine.
