Desert Eagle

When I was looking to get a Hand Cannon/Conversation piece I was ready to buy a DE in .44 mag! However I thought Id try one first and got a chance at the range. My thoughts are this:

Pros
- Hell of a nice looking gun, fit and finish is beautiful
- Huge gun and gets alot of attention
- Very unique, and you dont see too many
- Could shoot all day as recoil isnt that bad

Cons
- Way too heavy for my likeing
- Way too bulky grip is literally like a 2x4(makes glock feel like a compact)
- Light recoil(when Im buying a hand cannon I want that heavy recoil)
- Can only shoot full power loads and jacketed bullets(due to gas system)

Conclusion:
I reload and enjoy making up many different loads from plinkers to monster loads. I also would like to use lead in a .44 magnum as it is a hell of alot cheaper than jacketed. I also want that holy #### feeling when I fire it, or give it to a noob and they feel a full power .44 mag for the first time. I decided that the Ruger Redhawk was the best option for me. I can reload from mild to wild with no worries about function, and cheaper lead is an advantage. Also I could afford a nice stainless model and all the reloading setup for way less than the DE. Last but not least everyone should have a wheelgun, and why not make it a .44 magnum. If you dont reload .357 is cheaper but if your reloading I would say .44 mag is probably the most versatile cartride there is. Bought a Lever in .44 mag to and can do anything with one reloading setup.

I have only fired one Desert Eagle, that being a 44mag.My impressions were that it has a terrible trigger, and is very heavy.I had to wear ear plugs and muffs due to the muzzle blast.

Funny that all this rummor mill stuff comes from people who never owned the handgun or only used handloads to save a few $$$. I noticed from the last 3 years of owning mine that the 2 rounds I have ever had issues with firing it was because the reloader didn't properly size the case & the second round that I had an issue with ejecting, he didn't load enough powder in it. And this is only 2 rounds out of 1,000's I have shot threw it.
Oh ya as for the first reply post, the ### guy he is reffering to must be me because I have the shinny nicheal 50 AE @ Poco that he is reffering too :p

im going to have to keep my eyes open when im there now. id love to see one of these in action.

I'd go with the S&W .500 before this. Love the look and the weight

But 4 bucks a shot is a little ridiculous

Every firearm I own is a toy/fun range item. I would love to have one of DE sets that have all 3 calibres in shiney chrome or nickle.

What factory .357, .44 ammo works well with a DE? The .50 is their own ammo right?

There is a current list of "approved" ammo on the Magnum Research site. Very helpful :)

Have that excate model too.
Personaly I like the use of my hands so that 1 barely ever get's used as apossed to the DE were it shoots the same bullet except I could do it all day ;)

have to agree with Slavex and Satain. I wanted a new 50 cal one but was given a reality check by one of the guys at Epps with respect to the dismal availability of the 50AE ammo. Ended up buying a mint used .44 from a member on Gunnutz. Bought a couple of boxes each of all the ammo recommended by Magnum Research that I could find locally as well as a spring tune up kit.

My first two trips to the range with it saw it jam every 2 or three rounds no matter which type of ammo I fed it. I then replaced the springs and headed back to the range and the result was astounding... Out of 150+ rounds of the same ammo only two gave me issues, which I attribute to my handling of the gun.

Big, heavy, impractical for sure... but it is the most fun gun I've shot so far. next stop is to get this puppy hard chromed and possibly a 50AE barrel for double the fun.

My .02 cents is go for it if you can source the ammo in good quantity, otherwise look at a .44Mag version (same price btw)

:)

I have to say that i have always wanted on DE in 50 AE.. and this thread has convinced me that i need to get one.. Thanks alot guys.. my Wife will be #####y when i get it in the mail.. LOL

One day I will probably get a 50 desert eagle. Just to make bigger booms is all, and they're a cool piece to add to the collection.
I bought a .460V x-frame first though as I preferred it over a DE.

I would like the 3 calibre kit, has anyone seen this for sale anyhwere in Canada? Magnum Research dealer?

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and hands on experience. Like what's found on the net, opinions & experiences vary from good to bad to great.
Since .50AE costs about $3/rnd (at Target Sports) and hard to find, .44magnum might be the way to go.

rdef1...what spring did you replace on your .44DE and where did you get it?
You're in the GTA? Do you shoot at the Grange?

I love shooting mine. The first 100 rounds were factory and cost me $3.50 each. So I started reloading, and they cost me .75-.80 cents per. Tons 'o fun. Let you friends shoot it and watch the grins appear.
Don't worry about all the doom and gloom from guys saying it jams etc. Mine has been perfect for me. Some of my friends who aren't shooters will have problems though. The case comes back and hits 'em in the face (limp wristing). hehe Hold it properly, use hot loads, oil it properly, and it's gonna be very reliable.

The 41/.44 spring tuneup kit is available from Freedom Ventures (site sponsor) and includes " two outer recoil springs, two inner recoil springs, two retaining rings, ejector pin, ejector spring, magazine spring, extractor pin, extractor spring and firing pin spring".

I replaced all the recoil , ejector, extractor, and the firing pin springs.

Yes I'm a member at the Grange club :)

rdef1, thanks for the info!
I just joined The Grange so the next time I hear a cannon go off I'll have to see if its you...
