Why is .223 so expensive??

gromley, since you are a geologist find me a bunch of gold, that easy metal to find in the ground, and I will happily trade it for all the 223 ammo you want, pound for pound. Good ammo too, not the cheapo stuff. that way you don't have to give any consideration for the price, costs, demand etc as I will truly be able to supply you with as much weight in the best .223 as you can supply me weight in gold....really, and I will even pay the shipping....both ways.

People continuing to buy at high prices is THE major factor.

Nobody would be pricing single boxes of .223 for $21.00 if they just sat there and collected dust.

Shooting a .22lr for fun plinking isn't really a joke, considering ammo prices. More than a few of us have invested in nicer .22's that we can actually afford to shoot, rather than buy $1 per shot centerfire ammunition.

one would think increased demand would bring on more production and lower prices

I think thats the main problem as somebody already pointed out.

It's that Manufacturing couldnt keep up with demand for a while so they spent some cash on upgrading equipment, which then gets passed on to us.

Now that demand has gone down a little bit... just like gasoline "we'll lower it one dollar even though we raised it by 5" mentality prevails.

Great then....If you actually believe that, then I suggest you contact John at Marstar, or Mark at Questar and tell them the price difference`s in their products compared to the State`s is "Highway robbery"....Show them that you have a better handle on how to run a business than they do....Please contact them...I, and I`m sure others, would love to hear their response to your charge....I find people who use the terms "greedy", "gouging", Highway robbery" and such, to be rather tedious people...Go away....:rolleyes:

So I guess when gas went up to 1.50 a liter and the oil companies were bragging about how they were making upteen billions in profits(not revenue, profits) you were not complaining one bit? After all they are running a business and can charge what people are willing to pay right...

In reality canadian ammo dealers have to charge more than us dealers because their cost is higher. The US charges $$ in licensing and fees to export ammo and that gets passed along. If you can find an acceptably priced source for slugs you can roll your own and save some $ over the long run. Or get a nicer .22 and try spending some time perfecting your shot with the iron sight.

It wasn't all that long ago you could get the Win 40 round value packs at Walmart, I think the price was $14.97. I bought about 15 of them, before I got into reloading. When I was spending more time at P&D I can remember Diane telling me a few years ago that her Dist. told her that 223 was going double in price. He was right. FS

I, for one, wasn't complaining; my job is dependent on the profitability of oil companies. That aside, I would far rather pay $1.50/L for all the gasoline I wanted than not be able to find any at $.50/L, which is what would happen if the government instituted price controls.

If you want to blame somebody, blame the government's inflationary monetary policy. If it weren't for this, the long term trend would be towards falling commodity prices.

While we would all love to buy .223 ammo at $5/20 or gas a $.50/L, it isn't possible to supply these things at those prices for any business that plans on being a going concern. If it were, someone would be doing so already, as they would be able to increase their market share over their higher priced competitors.

It's nice to have ' supporters ' ;)

I kinda wondered when you would chime in. We were about due for .223 thread.

Any-who......reload. Takes a little longer, but ammo availability is never an issue. I'm a component & powder whore myself.

...
I was complaining about the huge TAXES that are put on gasoline at every level...The oil is taxed.... Property taxes....Refinery taxes...Taxes on shipping...Provincial taxes...Federal taxes....GST tax and now....The Horse S*it Tax....
And for these "profits"....Where do think that money goes to?..In Scrooge McDuck`s private vault?...Tens of billions are paid to shareholders (call dividends)....Billion`s are paid in wages and benefits...Billion`s are spend looking for other oil fields (with no guarantee of finding anything)...Billion`s are spend in R and D.... People forget, this is a Billion dollar industry, which means, yes they make billions, but they can also lose billions....Trying running your own business, and see how easy it is to make umpteen billions in profit....I know, start up your own ammo business....Let me know when you start selling .223/556 ammo for 5 bucks a box....I will be the first in line to buy, and I will grovel at your feet for your wonderful business acumen....
