Im still new to this so take it easy on me

If it calls for a 3.050" OAL
and lets say i only go 3.045" or 3.055"

I'm shooting a 6.5x55 swedish mauser 140 gr SGK using RE22

what i figure is that it will only change the accuracy slighty.

what do you guys think??

It doesnt' really matter what it "calls for? as you can tailor the lenght the your magazine / throat . I always seat longer that the what the manual calls for as the manual will usually state a lenght that should fit any rifle / magazine.

Some guns will shoot better if you get closer to the lands...there's only one way for you to find out.

Until you narrow down a charge weight that your rifle likes, the OAL will make little difference. Just FYI, the Swedes typically have a very long throat to accommodate the 160gr round nose bullets and it is unlikely you will be able to actually seat a 140gr bullet long enough to get close to the lands. Not that it seems to matter much, the Swedes have a reputation as being very accurate rifles anyway.

i don't know if they still make them or not , but barnes had a 140 x bullet that was the same length as the old 160 round nose .
i get really nice groupings with these . the shorter bullets , not so much .

if these are no longer available i'm seriously thinking about having the barrel setback and cut with a shorter throat on my swedish mauser , then going to a 120 grain bullet .

How do you "find the lands"? Is it a matter of seating a bullet in a dummy round loosly so it is drivin into the casing when it touches the rifling?

pretty much , you need a tight "sliding fit " , and i take a magic marker and "paint " the bullet , then you can realign the bullet acording to the scrape marks . sometimes when you pull it back out , the bullet hangs up in the barrel and pulls a small amount back out of the case .

do this several times to make sure you got a good measurement .

for my 22-250 I used a case with a good split in the neck that would give me enough tension to work with. Results were night and day compared to using the suggest oal by the manual.
