Holster Modification

Would a holster which has been modified by drilling a hole in the bottom (for an extended barrel to poke through) be allowed in IPSC or other sports?

...and if so, does anyone know a good way of doing this? I know it is not rocket science, but I don't want it to look like a hack job. I will be modifying a Blade Tech DOH to fit a Sig P226 with extended/threaded barrel.

As long as it holds the firearm securely...and covers the trigger guard, it should be OK. I'd be more concerned about someone modifying a race holster to fit a gun it was not designed for (never a good idea) The style of the blade tech would be much more forgiving...

How long is the barrel? It may not be IPSC Production legal (if that's your intention)

It is a Sig P226 Elite Dark; according to the Sig website a regular elite has a 4.4" barrel, and the threaded barrel is 4.9".

I was planning on shooting in production but I did not know there were any rules pertaining to barrel length. It was my understanding that any factory option was ok in production.

The holster retains the pistol by squeezing in from the sides, so a hole in the bottom will not affect its secureness. In fact despite the extra 0.5" of barrel length, the holster holds the pistol suprisingly well as is - just not how it was designed to.

The 226 Elite is on the approved list...I've never heard of the Dark.

The maximum barrel length for Production is 5 inches...

I'm sure your gun is OK...but it wouldn't hurt to fire off a question to NROI Canada...just to be safe.

Just did this myself to a bladetech DOH for a STI GP6 with a factory 5" barrel.

I used a dremel to trim out out of the bottom.
It looks a little silly, but this mod is perfectly acceptable to all things IPSC. The gun is far better secured than the majority of stuff we use.

I'll get some pics tonight - I owe some folks the GP6 pics.

If you use a Dremel and carefully work the opening so that it comes out concentric to and slightly larger than the barrel it'll look downright factory. Or if you don't have a Dremel or similar a larger round file followed by a rod or dowel that is close to the barrel diameter wrapped with sandpaper will do a nice job of making an opening that is nicely shaped and concentric to the barrel extension. Just take your time and insert the gun often to check on centering and size as the opening progresses.
 
Thanks Freedom Ventures - that was extremely helpful! I am thinking about trying to use a drill to make the hole, but because there is nothing for the tip of the bit to rest on, I am not sure how well it would work. Anyone else try a drill?
 
A drill PRESS will work fine, tap a small mark where you want to drill with an all to get the bit centered, then go up slowly in drill bit sizes until you get the desired size. It should look fine. A hand drill could be quite challenging and might yield a lack luster result.
 
Go buy a step bit, pick the next largest size to your barrel then the next size will chamfer the hole a little. Makes a clean finish.

I myself prefer Fluke step bits for long term quality, but they can be have for cheap at princess Auto, these would work great for plastics and mild use on metal just just a good cutting fluid.
 
well i ran the gun configuration by Vince Pinto and the reply was not favourable. it was: "It seems that there are two differences: the threaded barrel and the black grips, neither of which disqualify that model from consideration. However, it's too late for addition to the Approved Gun List for this year, so we'll need to wait until March 2011.

In the meantime, if it's not on the list, it's not approved. "

this would mean you would have to shot the firearm in Standard Division for as long as it would fit in the box.
 
...and people wonder why I hate sports with extensive rules? What is the point of a rule that says in production division you can have a barrel no longer than 5" if the pistol needs to be on an approved list anyway - overly redundant if you ask me. I could see IPSC claiming that someone might have an advantage with a threaded barrel since it is 0.5 inches longer and would therefore give slightly higher velocities, but a black grip - come on! I bought this pistol specifically to shoot in IPSC - at that time I had no idea what a sea of rules I was up against. I thought I had seen the Elite Dark on the approved list but a quick search turned up empty; I did find it on the approved list for USPSA

The step bit is a great idea, I will try one. I have already used a 1/2" bit with a handheld drill, and it worked well but is not quite large enough.

Ultimately all that matters is: "it's too late for addition to the Approved Gun List for this year, so we'll need to wait until March 2011. In the meantime, if it's not on the list, it's not approved. "

I bought this particular pistol (+holster, belt, mags, and pouches) specifcally with the idea of trying out IPSC - looks like I am out of luck! Keep your eyes on the EE as I may be selling a bunch of stuff soon.

You could always shoot in the Standard division with it.
