ok, so evidently i find revolvers easier to shoot as a beginner, so i'm going to look for one to buy as soon as my RPAL comes in.

i like the traditional looks of a Ruger Redhawk, but would LOVE it if they were available with a swing-out cylinder. i really dislike the looks of the grips on the S&W / Ruger GP revolvers, though - but they do have the swing-out cylinder.

so - is there a nice good quality traditional looking revolver with a swing-out? chambered for 357Mag. stainless or nickel, not a fan of black (blued) when it comes to a revolver.

if no such "beast" exists, then i'm most likely to just get a Redhawk and put up with the one-by-one loading gate.

EDIT - title fixed

I'm guessing you mean the Ruger Blackhawk -- the Redhawk is Ruger's larger-framed double action revolver:

I'm not aware of any Single Action revolvers with swing out cylinders, though. I don't think the design would allow it.

You've got the BlackHawk and RedHawk mixed up. The Redhawk is double action so the cyn. does swing out. The BlackHawk is single so it has the loading gate.

A redhawk is double action revolver yes it has a swing-out cylinder
a ruger blackhawh is a single action revolver it does not. It has loading gate. Good luck maybe for first toy you could consider a 22

hmm, oops! yeah, i did mess up - i'm thinking Blackhawk. cuz the Redhawk isn't available in 38/357.

so, colourblind hawks aside, what is out there that's stainless, traditional looks on the grip, 38/357, swing-out cylinder, not a zinc-made-in-china-POS?

as far as 22, the club has a bunch so i will just borrow theirs whenever i can and supply my own ammo.

You are looking for a GP100. Smaller frame then the Redhawk, but other than that they look the same.

The GP100 series is 38/357.

... except for the grip. i don't like the GP's type of grip. i'd really prefer something with the more traditional type of grip like the Blackhawk has.

i'm hoping that somewhere such a combination does exist (and it in the same price range as the blackhawk): revolver, 357mag, traditional shape grip, swing out cylinder, 5" to 6.5" barrel, prefer stainless but could consider blued

fired 38, 357, and 44. loved the 38, and while the 44 was loads of fun, it's also loads expensive (and no, i don't have the time or the inclination to get into reloading - ever!)

i can't see myself putting 200 rounds of 44 downrange on a weekend. money and wrists!!!

and you CAN fire "pussy" loads (44 special) through the redhawk- i do it ALL THE TIME- so you actually have the loadings- the 44 special, the 'transitional" and the FULL BLOWN 44 MAG "HUNTING" - so the only difference is the WEIGHT- but try BOTH the SUPER RED HAWK and the REDHAWK -the FRAME is DIFFERENT-it's the gp100 and the SUPER that have the same design, not the redhawk

In the traditional single action style there is no mainline brand name that uses a swingout cylinder for that style of gun. They all load and unload one at a time through the gate.

Of the double action style revolvers there's none that I can think of that come close to duplicating the classic western style. There's just too much "stuff" that needs to be up around the hammer to allow that sort of look to the gun.

I can think of one.

The M1895 Nagant revolver came in double-action and used a loading port.

Though, feeding them can be a huge PITA.

hmm, sounds like i may have to accept the one-at-a-time loading Blackhawk, or forego the traditional beauty and walk towards the more modern stuff like a GP or 686 or whatnot.

unless - like Jeff said - i happen to spot a Redhawk in 38/357
