Hi all,

Do clubs usually have guns you can rent/borrow while you're there to shoot if you only have a membership but don't own any guns yourself?

Cheers,
-m

Not usually. Some do out west I think.
More ranges would have ammo you could buy than guns to rent.

Thanks guys.

So, do you think it would make any sense to get my license if i don't intend on purchasing firearms in the near future? If I can't get my hands on a firearm to use.. then what's there's no reason to go through the whole process now, correct?

Depends on where you are. In any case, clubs and ranges are two different things. You join a club to shoot at a range the club rents. Some clubs do own the land the range is on though.
Most, but not all, clubs usually have a 'club gun' you can borrow. Most club members will bend over backwards to help you, including letting you shoot their firearms. At least to try something you may be looking at buying.
Some gun shops that also have a range might also rent firearms by the hour. Not many though. Lot of liability issues involved. In a shop that does rent, you must have an RPAL.

Thanks guys.

With $ 200, you can have at a decent (albeit used) .22 and a 12 guage too, plus ammunition.....it's not too expensive to start. ;)

It is worth getting, because to rent/borrow/buy guns and to buy ammo you require it. As for buying start with a rimfire they can by inexpensive the ammo is cheap and they are fun to shot.

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you.

I just called Target and put this question to them, and the gentleman said "with supervision, yes".

Being completely new to this, I'm still hesitant to bring in a firearm to my home with a child in the house even with all the safety measures put in place to keep things safe. Mind you, if i have a firearm but only purchase ammo while at the range and discharge it all there, that could work.

lol.. seeing my little boy run around the house, i definitely can believe that.

I'm not in anyway against it or anything. It's the initial hesitiation and all the b.s. that gets put into your head about firearms and kids.

Again, like i said.. i'm new. Maybe it's just newbie jitters.

There is a handy thread somewhere here about Stackon cabinets and safes... Check it out.

I've got the less expensive cabinet and it's shoved into a closet. I would be verrrryyy very very surprised (like ready for he'll to freeze over) if the often visiting and inquisitive 7yr old ever gets into that. Not to bad for $150.

Each club is different. This is one of the questions that you would want to ask when considering (application for) membership in a given club.

It makes absolute sense to get your firearms license as soon as possible. Regardless of whether you buy anything right away, with a firearms license, you will always have the option of borrowing or renting or leasing or buying a firearm at short notice, and at any time.

If you wait until you want to buy a firearm before getting a firearms license, you'll be unable to borrow a firearm (except under direct supervision). You might have to wait months to get the firearms license. You might miss out on a great opportunity.

While someone may be happy to lend you a firearm, having to constantly stand at arms-length away from you, and be in a position to correct your behaviour - and thereby being unable to shoot - is not fun. You might find that the (initial) warm welcome will wear out after three range visits, unless you are clearly making a sincere attempt to obtain a firearms license.

You all have valid points and like you said, Wendell, if i don't have my license i might very well miss a great opportunity on leasing/buying, etc... at short notice. That's a big enough motivator to get the license.

After all, this isn't a 2 month investment. Might as well start now.

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice!!!

I agree with Wendell, start the licensing process now. Considering the amount of time it takes in Ontario from when you start the first course to actually receiving your R-Pal in the mail your son could well be in high school by the time you are actually able to buy a gun.:D

That's the way it seems to me right now, as I patiently wait by my mailbox.

Since you live in Brampton, your not to far from Target Sports ( 404 & stouffville rd ) They have familiarization shoots for unlicensed people and range guns available to their club ( The Grange ) members.

If your interested in trying the sport before getting a PAL, its a $40 fee plus ammo/gun ( ie $25 = 50 rounds on a 9mm with gun ) and this will get you a range officer and a lane to shoot in. However, its advised you call in and book a time as there crazy busy and can't accept walk-in's ( this is generally what the staff tell me when im there )

Hope this helps !

This specifically is what got me hooked. I've been there before and tried a variety of firearms during the familiarization shoots... Shotgun, AR-15, .44 magnum and 9mm. I loved it.

Maybe i wasn't clear when i asked them earlier today about range guns when you're part of their club. I'll call again and ask just to clarify.

Does the $500 yearly membership seem on par with what you guys have seen from your experience with other clubs?

You are looking to pay around the $500+ mark for a range around the GTA. Dive a little out of town (Kitchener, Elmira, Etc.) and it gets around $180 mark. The ranges outside of the city are nowhere near as busy either.... plus you can actually shoot outside for rifles, shoot skeet, archery ranges, etc. I guess being in Brampton you may want to look into clubs in KW.

Sad but true...:(

That's good to know. I haven't limited myself to only GTA. Living in Brampton, i'm used to driving an hour to wherever (i.e. work) - so goin out to Hamilton or Kitchener wouldn't be out of the question. For that big of a price range and the same travel distance, i'll definitely be looking further.

This rane seems pretty cool - http://www.hahaclub.ca/. Exactly as you described with regards to outdoors.. etc. $210.

Dont let fear for your children keep you out of gun ownership. You're playing right into the anti's hands doing that. Guns are harmless if respected, and stored properly.

Search hard enough, and you'll find a locking gun cabinet for $100 or so NEW. Even less used. Buy a trigger lock, and their isnt a toddler in the world that will get into your guns. For further security, lock your ammo in a tool box or something similar.

As well as keeping your guns out of the wrong hands, you're exceeding firearm/ammo storage laws.
