where do you guys buy your benchmark powder and primers for a .223 rifle ? is there a differance in powders that should b used for handgun and others that should b used for rifles?

Short answer:
HUGE differnence in burning rate.
Pistol powders have to be consumed in the 4 to 7 inch barrel, while rifle powders have perhaps 20 - 26 inches in which to continue burning.
So pistol powders are much faster.
DO NOT INTERCHANGE THEM!

As Saskcop says, do some reading.
Buy a loading manual, and read the first chapter or two before flipping to the load data.
 
FWIW, I was under the impression that 98% of the burning was done within the first couple/few inches of the barrel. You only start to lose velocity once the bullet exits the barrel. However, as previously stated DO NOT INTERCHANGE PISTOL AND RIFLE POWDER.

You can try Higginson's powder in Ont or try your luck at a Cabelas or WSS for your components.
