The heat oxidizing colors will polish off with the same pad. The colors being literally skin deep. But I'm more than sure that your surface colouring was simply the powder residue effects.

Since the gun is made from stainless I'll let you in on something to try. For some time I've been using some scouring powder called Bar Keeper's Friend to help me with cleaning my stainless pots, pans and sink. This stuff works amazingly well and it cleans off badly burnt stuff quickly and easily with little work and pressure needed. I'll bet it would do a fast job on stainless gun parts as well. The only downside is since it is using water to wet out and activate the powder it'll only be good for using during full on strip downs where you can rinse well with hot water and set aside to dry. It even worked well with only a little more effort on a pot that I allowed to boil dry and actually get hot enough to get the oxidation colours on along with the burnt on carbon remains of some rice. But considerably more elbow grease was needed for that one..... :D
