CQB Clinic, C.F.B Borden. April 17-18.

Some of the guys were looking/ inquiring where I got my serpa drop leg thigh holster- You can get it as a complete kit or just without the holster if you have one already and purchase the thigh rig. Call MD charlton or look above to Daves Surplus or One shot tactical for similar type products. Most guys at the clinic have purchased many of their equipment from the sponsors above. Wow the plugs guys gave about the different vendors. We should get referal discounts. lol

For the Safariland fan crowd(incl myself), if you want to be able to rock your BlackHawk rig high near the hip, consider doing a similar chop as below:

This is result in much better weight distribution to avoid the common mistake of having an anchor on your leg. Not a huge issue if you are on a range for a couple hours, becomes an annoyance if you wear a pistol all day. (Link to thread I did awhile ago: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417693 )

Another awesome thing to do is mount the holster on a MOLLE belt. Provided you have a solid belt system and the hard mount, you can avoid the leg bit all together(also common with Safariland crowd with the low hip mount belt loop). This is entirely dependent on whether it would clear your rig though so YMMV.

See what works for you.

Congrats to Tim and Hungry. This was the best run shooting clinic I have ever attended. Excellent training, relevent pointers and lots of trigger time. I wish i could have gone back for the second day.

I used a Nornco 1911 and a SKS, reloaded with stripper clips. I did not sprint from 25 to 15 yards - I waddled. But I think I can give some of the kids a run for their money.

I look forward to shooting my first match.

Thanks for the kind words there, Ganderite. And for those of you who don't know Ganderite's (very) extensive shooting background, we are all in the presence! :D Trust me, he's likely forgotten MORE  than I'll ever know about rifles and pistols!! I'm just a spring chicken right next to him!

It's all about learning and sharing what works (and often , what does not work) for you. Many black rifle owners have loads and loads of gear, but few of them have the opportunity to get out and stress test them under (match) intensity. I did not mention deployment and combat in sandboxes, we are not preparing any of you for that. We are preparing you for the ORA Service CQB matches... and of course :D the potential zombie invasion. LOL

Speaking of what works.... Here's a shameless plug for the Norinco M4.... We had a couple of Norinco M4 (price point boomsticks at $ 800ish to $ 900ish) and they ran all weekend without a hiccup. I should know because I'm the safety dude on the line watching and monitoring any stoppages, clearing drills, and back on the line shooting safely. They are great to use in this game. One would hate to think of carbon'ing up an LMT, KAC, Noveske :D, and destroy the  collector value of a COLT's boomstick. Many of you discovered that some mags don't drop freely of some mag wells. Many of you learned that 5.5 round magazines really work well. Many magazines pinned to 5 (not to be confused with 5.5) bring out the ghosts in a rifle / mag system. Some of you got super wise and drew letters/numbers/symbols all over your magazines to identify them for further improvement/tweaking/testing/eliminating and/or relegating to the purpose of a FOUR round magazine (advance to the next pink line, double tap each fig 11), then transition to pistol (2 to the center , 1 to the top).

I had a good night's sleep after a long weekend of shooting and sharing. I thank all of you who sacrificed your time and money and energy to spend a weekend on Langemark Range with Timk and myself. The cameraderie was second to none, witness: nobody wanted to leave the parking lot after all those handshakes and high 5's. :)

In all my years of the shooting sports, Service CQB has the most fun and friendship after the matches/clinic. Then again, my M14 Clinics are a hoot, too.

 Gotta get ready for the day job ;)

Awesome weekend - huge thanks to Hungry & TimK. For anyone who hasn't been to one of their clinics/matches - you need to get out there. Its full on, well organized & you get to actually USE all that gear you have sitting at home. You'll be surprised at how stuff that looks great in your living room can totally crap out in the field!

For guys new to this (like me) its a great way to meet everyone in a comfortable atmosphere - everyone was totally relaxed & all questions answered.

Thanks so much for the tips & gear (Evel dezel is da man!)

I'm with you dude, I'd love to go too. Maybe something will show up on the island this summer, lets hope! I don't own an AR yet yet though because I haven't had the cash to spend on it, but I hope to soon.

I may be out in July.....I will hopefully be on leave in Nanaimo. I have been instructing Police/Military quick aim (gunfighter aka CFOSP practices 41-48 PWT 4 pt 1-2) and ICQB for about 3 years solid and have a background in this field before that.

If you have a rifle, carbine, kit and a range to use...supply your ammo and I will give you a day or two of my time if it works out. I won't charge you $$ but I do like crown royal.....

I will be busy when out there...fishing, surfing and time with the family but maybe something could be done.

furuness.oa@hotmail.com

furuness.oa@forces.gc.ca

or pm on CGN for details if you don't trust me or think I am a wingnut...I can take it...lol

No promises as I don't know yet if my leave will be at that time (posted during timeframe mentioned)

In the summer, I imagine that an IPSC rig would be sufficient. However, we shot in much cooler temperatures and this is where clothing seemed to obstruct access to the pistol and related accessories.

I noticed two prevailing solutions:
1. Mount the pistol on the vest
2. Have a tie-down holster

With #1 the pistol is likely going to be drawn 90 degrees away from the back stop (especially if drawn with the body in natural alignment with the target), and this would obviously be outside of the arc of aim. That said, the weight of the pistol would likely feel more comfortable there and be more readily accessible if you were a logistics truck driver for the military (which perhaps none of us are), when you are sitting in the confined space of your vehicle. This style of holstering also consumes a lot of value space on the vest.

Q: Is there an issue in CQB Service Condition matches with drawing the pistol outside of the arc of aim?

With #2 there is the possibility of restriction to leg movement, etc.... so I am kind of thinking that "Winz" solution is in the direction that I want to go.

What the heck would we want to use to carry the very short LAR 10 round magazines in? Are they allowed to be loaded to 10 rounds in Service Rifle (the Service Rifle Clinic, Word document would suggest that they can only be loaded with 5 rounds which would make them a very stupid idea because of how small they are: "enough to have 50 rds loaded eg. 10 x 5/30 or 6 x 5/30 and 4 LAR 10 rd")?

Who supplies the "best" 5.5 pinned 30 round AR magazines? I am thinking of 10 of them that should be working perfectly, so I have a reliable start at this game until they have been used enough that they start to fail ("there are two kinds of magazines -- magazines that have failed and magazines that are about to fail").

To summarize:
1. What is the best tie-down rig that works for you?
2. Where to buy 5.5 round / 30 round capacity, AR magazines (place & type), that worked for you?
3. What did you find was able to carry the very tiny 10/15 AR pistol magazines in way that made them very accessible?

Question #1 - What is the best tie-down rig that works for you, still of interest.
Question #2 - Already purchased a 10 pack, so no longer of interest.
Question #3 - Already purchased 5x LAR-15 Magazine Couplers, so no longer of interest.

Wow... huge price differences in these LAR-15 Magazine Couplers!!!

Perhaps my approach is wrong and I will need to spend lots of hours researching this.
Regardless how I acquire the information, it is always possible that I will be feed misinformation.

Now working on the tac-vest. Would like something that would be comfortable in the summer... thinking of the "MOLLE Tactical Vest"

http://www.opsgear.com/index/page/product/product_id/1816/product_name/MOLLE+Tactical+Vest

And will need enough pouches to hold 8 to 10, 30 round AR magazines.
That would work. Things get pricey very fast once you add all the pouches on to the bill.
There is a suitable vest being offered on the EE that would fit your needs. Made by TAG,,

Beaver- a lot of surplus stores sell great molle vests new. friends of mine got theirs at a surplus store in missisauga and use it for both airsoft and CQB. Send me a pm and I can send you the contact info. I was there today and they had a full molle chest rig, tons of pouches and tac vests with the pouches already included. Everything was new. Now that Ive done the CQB course it really has me more thinking about practicality and affordibility. I bought all my gear from darren at One shot tactical but i needed my gear for work (air ambulance repatriating contract workers from Iraq) so i needed to carry plates. Other than that I think i would of went with a gear from Condor or Parkland. Chest rigs and modular operator plate carriers go from 69.99 to 129.99. I could have saved some money and bought more ammo.

Thank you for the Mississauga surplus store info.

Perhaps I will just try to use what I already have for the Service Rifle Clinic so I can understand what is wrong with it, if there is anything wrong with it. It was certainly sufficient for the CQB Clinic. I will try to put two Drop Zone magazine holders in the top webbing, so I can carry enough magazines (I bought the Drop Zone magazines several years ago).

I heard of a lot of issues with the current Canadian Military vest...
http://www.dropzonetactical.com/lbe/modcanvest.html

Wonder if anyone has actually used the Drop Zone Holster...
http://www.dropzonetactical.com/holsters/dropholster.html

It looks like it may be a very good choice for a tie-down holster, as it claims to work for CZ, Glock, 1911 type firearms, and looks like it can be warn over winter garments.
