Afghan snipers

Very good vid.

X2 well put together.

Interesting what happens when modern ballistics come up against old school ballistics, I have read that the pirates in the South Asian Seas and the Philippines have been dealing some hurt over the years to the Filipino military as the pirates are using old Garands and other WW2 30 cal rifles.

The bolt on that No.4 LB looks pretty dry..little if any oil is used..but then ..maybe thats for the better...the dry talcum .like dust is everywhere i have been told.

Wonder what the bore is like after all these years...and corrosive primers..

If that rifle could talk....perhaps was stolen in Pakistan, as they recieved aid from the Brits...also does it have the famous Isaphore screw:dancingbanana:??

I looked at some of the pictures below after watching the video, Longbranch 1942. . . same type I have and same year, no luck figuring out the serial number on it though. Interesting!

Interesting read. I know he touches on it, but, allow me to be the first to say it here... Snipers? I guess it is point of this series to say that a taliban who aims his AK, and has good enough vision to see his target, rather than pointing and shooting an AK on full auto, is almost a sniper. So, a taliban with an Enfield, who aims every shot, IS a sniper. I guess you have to call them something on the day though. (Accurate fire?) Good to hear it isn't so common as to be noticed when encountered.

You kind of have to giggle at the "sniper" bit though, and of course we all know that all the Marines know that too.

I'm pretty sure that any male member of my entire extended family would make you think about Jesus if you sat behind a wall for 10 minutes while they plugged away at you with a 303 from 300 yards. No snipers among the lot of them. :) Likely the case for lot's of the Marines too, maybe with a Garand though. ;)

I don't think I owned a copy of SOF 'back in the day' that didn't feature a muj with a .303. I'd be more surprised to read an article stating that previous to this, the taliban hadn't thought to field a few of them, or none of them had figured out how to use the sights, or so on.

No doubt it IS different conducting a firefight against foe who might actually shoot someone. I'm glad to assume from this series that it doesn't happen more often. Good luck to the Marines.

Side note: I hope Cukier et al doesn't notice that the US Marines (or at least a US reporter) consider the Lee Enfield as posing a 'special risk' in combat operations. :D Millions of them floating around Canada... and with 10 round magazines! Photos of terrorists with Made in Canada LE too! (evidence it was diverted from a 'so called lawabiding' Canuck target shooter or hunter maybe?). It's amazing that anyone is left alive. Oh the humanity! We need new, better, laws. :runaway: : LOL

Not a lot of SVD's encountered, but...I wonder about Mosins? ;)

Some food for thought: had one of the soldiers had a 7.62mm rifle to respond with, the whole "explosion at a civillian site" to dislodge the opposing rifleman may have been avoided?

Even dollar-wise, an M-14 or bolt-action .308 would have cost far less than the missile used to "respond"!

A time when firearms where made in Toronto.....:yingyang:

At 1:13 in the video the guy reloading down by the wall looks like he is armed with the M240 (C6). If it is the gpmg, then they had the firepower on hand to punch through cover and a good chance of taking him out. Of course you have to find him first;)

I scored 4th highest score at CFSAC in 2009 with a lee enfield. Does that make me a sniper? No it doesn't - I'm a proficient shooter.

A sniper is skilled in observation, discipline of stealth, masters of patience and calculation of internal, external and terminal ballistics.

I think this is a RARE level of proficiency with the Taliban but what do I know?

Hard to say, but if it is in fact an M240 you'd think they'd lay into that building with it and call it a day. Sustained, accurate firepower at that distance will either scare the s**t out of him and he'll bug off, or get smoked.... But then again, the Yanks like to overkill pretty much everything.

I did hear one of them say "Conserve your ammo!" though. Maybe they were short on ammo and had a way to go yet.

By the way... What a great video! :)

Well to be a sniper, you need to have "glass" mounted on your rifle, too!....:D

the reason why the americans LIKE to OVERKILL IS that they've been bitten in the butt too many times- if you kill it, it might come back- if you kill it dead, it can't- there's a drill they teach in basic- after completing the assignment, you stand in front of the course instructor and he will ask " did you kill it?" and if you simply say yes, you are required to repeat the assignment- if you answer " I KILLED IT DEAD( APRROPRIATE RANK) and with the proper "enthusisam- you pass- and for god's sakes, don't call them "yanks-"- some of those boys are from TEXAS

The fact that the firefight was at about 200 yards and the SNIPER managed to finally wing somebody isn't exactly too impressive in my books........................a monkey could do that with a .22...............Harold

Quality, not quantity, counts more dead. Calling in an air strike or artillery is great, but having a good 7.62 rifle, and a scope, would be better than spraying .223's in the general direction of the enemy.
