Interesting read. I know he touches on it, but, allow me to be the first to say it here... Snipers? I guess it is point of this series to say that a taliban who aims his AK, and has good enough vision to see his target, rather than pointing and shooting an AK on full auto, is almost a sniper. So, a taliban with an Enfield, who aims every shot, IS a sniper. I guess you have to call them something on the day though. (Accurate fire?) Good to hear it isn't so common as to be noticed when encountered.
You kind of have to giggle at the "sniper" bit though, and of course we all know that all the Marines know that too.
I'm pretty sure that any male member of my entire extended family would make you think about Jesus if you sat behind a wall for 10 minutes while they plugged away at you with a 303 from 300 yards. No snipers among the lot of them.

Likely the case for lot's of the Marines too, maybe with a Garand though.
I don't think I owned a copy of SOF 'back in the day' that didn't feature a muj with a .303. I'd be more surprised to read an article stating that previous to this, the taliban hadn't thought to field a few of them, or none of them had figured out how to use the sights, or so on.
No doubt it IS different conducting a firefight against foe who might actually shoot someone. I'm glad to assume from this series that it doesn't happen more often. Good luck to the Marines.
Side note: I hope Cukier et al doesn't notice that the US Marines (or at least a US reporter) consider the Lee Enfield as posing a 'special risk' in combat operations.

Millions of them floating around Canada... and with 10 round magazines! Photos of terrorists with Made in Canada LE too! (evidence it was diverted from a 'so called lawabiding' Canuck target shooter or hunter maybe?). It's amazing that anyone is left alive. Oh the humanity! We need new, better, laws.
