First post here, just got my restricted PAL, was wondering about the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22, I joined my local range but haven't applied for using the restricted handgun range, so when I go to buy the .22 should I say i'm a member of a range? or do you think I will need to have access to the handgun range even though you are only allowed to shoot .22 on the rimfire range, which isn't restricted? let me know. Thanks

also, it comes with a 25 round clip, but you can get 10 round clips for them. would i have to get the 10 round click even though it is a rimfire rifle or is it just, restricted is restricted, must be limiited to 10 rounds?

1.) I can't speak to your particular club but CFC only cares that you are using the restricted firearms for sporting purposes - so you are good to go to own a restricted as you are a member of a club.

2.) Rimfires don't have magazine restrictions - you could have as many rounds as you want. Being Restricted is not a factor for limit on rounds - key things are if the firearm is semi auto or not (only semi autos have limits on rounds), if it is a pistol or not (10 rounds vs 5 rounds), and if it is a rimfire or centrefire (rimfire = no limit and centrefire = limit based on the first two criteria). Hopefully this helps. Restricted vs Non-Restricted influences where you can fire the firearm and transportation/security requirements.

Thanks that clears some of it up for me, it is a semi-auto rimfire rifle, i know all about the tranportation factor with regards to this rifle and my range is both centerfire and rimfire for restricted and non-restricted firearms (outdoor range) I think that belonging to the club is enough for me to purchase this rifle (instead of being able to use the handgun range, which i wouldnt be able to shoot my rifle at anyways).

Yes I should have clarified the second criteria. Pistols have a 10 round limit no matter what - magazines designed for rifles have a 5 round limit but if the rifle is able to use pistol magazines (i.e. AR-15, Beretta Storm) they can use 10 round magazines and still be legal. It is pretty convoluted and unfortunately not very clear. The rimfire no limit criteria is based on the premise that it is a rifle semi auto and not a pistol.

okay thank god, for a second after reading that i thought the rifle i am getting has a 5 round mag.. when it actually has a 25 round mag, so i should have no problems with mag capacity then?

Yep. You are good to go. The 5 round limit only applies to Semi-auto Centrefire Rifles Magazines(restricted or nonrestricted). You have a restricted (is this confirmed for the 15-22 yet?) semi-auto rimfire rifle. You can have as many rounds in the magazine as you want.

that is correct sir, restricted semi-auto rimfire rifle with a 25 round magazine.. wow that sucks for ar-15 lovers.. and i too plan to get one some day

Drewster, you aint far from me...... I would REALLY like to know where you got a M&P 15/22.... Last I heard they were still sitting on the classification at the RCMP.....

If you would like come on down to the Regina Fish and Game League indoor club on monday night (that's pistol club night). Come on out and see our 'toys' we can tell you all you need to know (and alot you don't) about being a restricted owner.

We are also avid reloaders, shooters, competitors and hunters, so we can answer alot of questions about a lot of different aspects of the sport.

Now I'm not saying this (CGN) aint an excellent resource, but no one can let you 'try their gear' over an ethernet line......

Cheers!

What a coincidence, I am reading another thread on this site mainly by you haha. I do not have one (not sure where you got that? I am simply asking about getting one), and forever I had thought they have been approved, Darren from Avonlea (Prairie Gun Traders) said he could get me one a while back but I think he must have been just mistaken.. :(

I really appreciate the offer! Where abouts is this club? I joined the Wildlife Federation with hopes of getting this rifle once I get my restricted license in the mail and going out to shoot, that was my intention of this thread, but oops, didn't realize it's not even classified yet! NERTZ! I have been really excited to get it for the past while too! And I have a majority of accessories THAT I ALREADY ORDERED! rail covers, replica acog, light and laser, magpul stock.. i really hope this becomes classified soon!

sorry i trailed off a bit, back to this club. Where is it? and about what time will you be there? My names Andrew Novak, 21 (on wednesday) at the U of R taking Police Studies. am a gun enthusiast ever since I took my Hunters safety and non-restricted course last year, I now own just one rifle, a 700 SPS Tactical in .308 but soon hope to change that!

Hope i get a reply before monday because that might just be the night ill swing by! Thanks again for the offer, I might just have to join that club (is it considered a handgun club? haha) especially for winter time.

Where are you getting this 15/22 from? Do they have it in stock? Have you physically seen it? As far as I've heard it has not been approved yet.

sorry man my local dealer actually told me that i could get it and that it was restricted, so i waited and didnt really look into it that much until i got my restricted and now im stuck to find out that its not even classified yet?! and know i have not physically seen it.
