i emailled all the info for my antique status letter and got a response that indeed it was an antique and that she would be sending my request to the person in charge of issueing these letters .then i got this email wtf does this email mean .

Good morning Mister ###xx,

We have a new way to do business, and since we have no obligation to
send Antique letter to an individual in possession of an antique
firearm. However if we are receiving an application for such firearm,
we have the obligation to send an antique letter.

In order to register your firearm, please use the below information
provided by the firearm technologist, at one of the attached links:

http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/online_en-ligne/reg_enr-eng.htm
(select the line that begins with "Proceed to secure site...")

or go to this link

Have a good day,

I guess I am confused what they mean by application, if it means they want you to register the gun before they send you a letter that is just retarded. I went to the bottom link from your email and clicked on hyperlinked "why" and look what popped up. They should read their own website before they start doing buisness a new way. This is very confusing, I would give these guys a call.

"YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER antique firearms, pellet guns with a muzzle velocity of less than 152.4 m (500 feet) per second or a muzzle energy below 5.7 joules (4.2 foot pounds), firearms that have been permanently deactivated so that they are no longer able to discharge ammunition or devices designed and used exclusively for signaling purposes (such as a flare gun). Call 1 800 731-4000 or visit our Web site at www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca to obtain fact sheets identifying which firearms are antiques, guidelines for permanently deactivating a firearm and other information"

to register a gun you need a pal /rpal , right ?

a antique does not require a pal / rpal to own , right ?

if the above statements are true , then someone got their wires crossed when the op asked for a antique letter .

This is probably because people got wise of them and started refusing to give them a PAL to register it that way.

What a bunch of tools. I've been waiting on a letter for almost 3 weeks now, so I'll give them a call and see if they do the same thing to me.

The new way has been happening for some months now.

You need to apply for the letter thru a Application online just like registering.
It doesnt Register the Antique but it makes a File with your name and Licence # that they keep on file.
But you do need to have a POL or PAL to do the Application so forget it if your not licenced.

I used to get RCMP Letters on everything not so much any more and less people will use this New System.
Its complicated and you must have a Firearm Tecs Special Number and know how to spell there entire Name or a Verifyers info tho im not sure it will work without a Tecs Number and name Oh and you must have a FRT Number to.

If your not doing the online applications your not gona get your letters for a very long time if ever.
Before a simple email was all you needed.

they never gave me an ftr # no tech # no tech name

Question is; do you have to have a letter to indicate that it is a prescribed antique? None of my antique rifles requires an antique letter, is it different for handguns?

As APU quoted above, "You do not have to register antique firearms". So is this new method simply a "back-door" way of getting you to register it?
....seems like it in my opinion.

Keeping your information on file seems to be somewhat ludicrous; unless you never sell it. And because it is not registered, once sold or even if another buyer down the road looses the letter.......I mean, wtf?

It seems to me, that as long as the firearms meets the criteria of an antique within the regulations, why even bother with going through trying to get a letter?

Anyone?

Well you try and do the Application you will see you need it.
Unless its Changed again from a week ago you need a bunch of stuff includeing a FRT #

Frist Rule is Phone Phone Phone... Your emails get lost and or forgot about theres very few left doing this now eh..
I gave up emailing just get the tecs Ext number i think its 1090.

Right now is a bad time as one tec is away
They will give you all the info you need.
Once you get the Application done print a copy then Email in the transaction confrimation Number.
Then Phone again make sure they got the #
Then wait........... wait some more and bingo you should get a email with a PDF file and a RCMP letter.

Before i used to fax in a request and get a letter in the mail in a week or two.

I liked the old system better.
Im getting less Rcmp letters now.
As other have said You do not really need the Letters.

so if you don't need a letter , lets say you get stopped in the middle of nowhere by someone with a badge ,and they discover you have what apears to be a handgun without the proper paperwork .
you tell them it is an antique and you do not need any paper work compared to a modern pistol .

are you screwed without the letter ?

Why does the letter in the OP read like a 7 year old wrote it? Who's working at the CFC these days that sends communications like that? I'm assuming its a cut and paste, with all due respect and apologies to the OP if its simply a hastily transcribed version.

Aren't you describing just another "registration certificate" that looks like a letter??

I've just spent the better part of the evening looking at the regs. No where does it say you need/must have a letter indicating that you have a prescribed antique. Just info on dates/calibers that make a firearm an antique.

I don't see the point or neccessity of having a letter. It doesn't make sense to me. It even states in the regs that if all you have is antiques, you don't need to register them, nor do you need a license to have them.

All depends on the cop who is standing in front of you and what mood she is in.....;)

Yes, I too am completely befuddled!
Why would anyone contact the CFC about their antique? Or getting some type of letter, which seems to be a registration which isn't a registration?
Why would you want the information regarding your antique on file at the CFC?

The only benefits are really with borderline guns, especially when it's a cop who doesn't know the law, but "knows" all handguns are restricted, so he'll be taking your antique with him, thank you very much.

Considering how many antiques are sold I'd imagine their "registration" more just keeps track of the numbers moving around.

That said, I'm not a fan of this system. I'm now drifting towards making my own antique certificates, basically a copy of antique law with the details on the specific gun, IE serial numbers, proof marks etc.

An example of a valid use of the registry might be buying a broomhandle mauser from the states. It's a semi auto pistol... they are very unlikely to let it across the border without government of canada paperwork.

it's a cut and paste it's exactly as written except i X out my last name ,i agree it's sounds like a kid wrote it

I suspect that the person who wrote the letter has English as a second language...

I stopped getting RCMP letters long ago and prefer a letter of authentication from a certified antique arms dealer.
The RCMP letter is given based on information YOU provide and that can be called into question by anyone in authority.
A cert of authenticity is closer to being proof positive that your iron is indeed antique.

JMO ;)

i'm buying it from the states and i was thinking that it would be better if i had one to go through customs and avoid the assle

the RCMP letters even say right on them this letter is made up with information provided by the letter requester, something like that.

So how good thats gona be in the feild i dont know.
Some photocopys from fladermans guide of your guns info and a copy of the Antique firearm laws of Canada would or should be Better than them RCMP letters.
I really think we need to do our own thing here more.

Im doing my own mix of info package, will it do any good? well i hope i never have to find out.
