1. For those who used both 12ga and 20ga - is the difference in recoil significant? I love to shoot shotgun but recoil kills all the fun. I shoot Rem 870P pump in 12x3 with Knoxx stock on it. So, I thought for my next shotty to go with 20ga.

2. Is there difference in recoil between pump action and autoloader? I want my next shotty to be an autoloader so I wonder if auto kicks more or less?

3. The shotgun I shoot has 18.5" bbl. I wonder how is recoil reduced/increased with longer barrel?

I love short barreled shotguns and would not want to go beyond 20" bbl, only if I absolutely have to...

And just a bonus question :)

I did not find even one tactical shotty in 20ga. Anybody knows of such a beast - tactical autoloader in 20ga?

I would appreciate your input!

Gas operated semis are soft-shooting, both 12 and 20. A recoil-operated gun like the Browning A-5 may feel similar to a pump gun. I've also shot few rounds from a Benelli SBE and thought it kicked harder than my A-5.

Gun weight is a BIG factor in determining recoil, also.

Can't comment on barrel length & recoil.

Yeah, 3" slug is gonna kick no question, knoxx or not. 20ga still kicks as they are usually lighter. Gas auto would be significantly less recoil, that's the main reason you see so many autos in the hands of waterfowlers.

If you are getting beat up at the range, why do you just get some low brass. I don't know anyone that goes around pump full power loads day in day out.

Semi autos have less felt recoil.

The weight of the shot and the velocity determine the amount of recoil...

Shoot less shot from 2 and 3/4 inch shells in a semi auto for the least recoil.

Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate your help.

I am happy to learn that I do not need to go to 20ga because the choice for guns and ammo is so limited. So I am really happy to stick to 12ga.

I will pick up 2-3/4" low # shots and will try again with a pump. However, I am set on autoloader and just need to find one I would like to have. I guess it would be in between Fabarm, Rem and Benelli for me ;)

If you are going to keep shooting slugs and buckshot have a look at the low/managed recoil loads by remington and winchester. No difference in accuracy with the slugs out to 50 yards. A noticeable difference in felt recoil regardless of what type of action you are shooting. Not as soft as lighter loads but definitely easier on the shoulder than the full monty

Thank you for suggestion! :) I will look into those as well. The reason I shoot 00 and slugs is that this is the load I will use if I am hiking, so I thought it is just practical to train with those. Also, 50-70 yards is approximately the range I am aiming for.

But for shooting at a range, anything would work, and for a lot cheaper as well. I shot some reduce recoil rounds while I was at Brinks and they pattern a bit better and a lot softer shooting. But for zombears, I keep my full power slug handy when camping.

I like "zombears" term! Cool! That pretty much summarizes the target, lol! :)

Don't forget the Winchester SX3! It has been working really good for me. Very little recoil. I also have an 870 and that has a lot more kick to it.
