I beg to differ-

I'm sure you probably read the stickies and maybe tried to see the Abbotsford video, but if you, like me couldn't see crap on the video so didn't bother searching for the right frame nor understood where the shims go upon READING the FAQs, here's a little diagram:

shims.png

If your flashhider is welded and you don't want to smack it off, just cut a shim and place it (for the barrel one, the lower one should be easy to put without cutting the shim)

You add the shims there because, remember what the goal of this manipulation is: tightening the gaz system, the shims will lift the gaz system a bit. Depending on how loose your system is, you add the shims and test by trial and error.

Sometimes, the need for shims is an illusion! As alot of the chinese m14 have the gaz cylinder lock inserted in the wrong side! If you remove the flashhider, you can just flip the gaz cylinder lock and put it back and then see if it will improve.

The shims DO NOT go as shown in the diagram.

They go between the barrel shoulder and gas system ferrule lip plate,
Not between the gas system ferrule lip plate and the gas cylinder assembly.

And no shims on the bottom gas cylinder piston tube.
The gas cylinder ferrule lip plate is meant to contact the ferrule at the bottom lip only, any other contact causes inaccuracy.
Correct shim installation keeps the plate from touching the ferrule and allows the bottom lip to contact the bottom of the ferrule.

glad you could correct me chopper, I guess the improvement I've been seeing with the shims in the wrong place was godsent skills (when I had shims, removed them upon unitizing)

what was I thinking trying to help others, I'm still a noob hehehehe:D

U can put shims back to hand tight the 8 ring at 4 oclock and tool tight at 6.
Nice tight groups :)
Very well worth doing - Especially with gas system unitizing !
